"Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign is a twilight style paranormal romance/suspense. It tells the story of Adam, a teenager who loathes the mundane human existence he is surrounded with. He meets Carly a girl with psychic powers. Eventually he discovers that he is adopted and also has psychic powers because they are from the same group of people who posses psychic powers in their DNA. This leads the two on a compelling voyage of discovery about their families’ past and eventually leads them into a face off with a Russian governmental agency bent on eliminating the gene for the psychological powers that they posses.

I found it a compelling and entertaining story to read. I found that I was fascinated by the diction used in the descriptions. For me this was the most absorbing part of the book. The use of suspense was another thing that I really liked about the book. The twists and turns associated with the story really took me by surprise and kept me interested in the story to the very end. Finally the graphic design of the novel was also very interesting because the darker faded pages made it look like a journal.

I found though that I did not like the description of some of Adams darker side. I was horrified to read about his obsessive pursuit and kidnapping of a girl that he has become infatuated with early in the novel. I also found Adams relationship with his mother in the first part of the novel to be exceptionally creepy. However, I found that the author attempted to revise this by having the character overcome the unsavoury parts of his past as the novel progresses.

Another thing that I did not like was the author’s use of gang to describe Adam’s group of telekinetic friends. This is because I found it kind of demeaning and corny for a teenager to be using these words to talk about their friends. I also found the way that Carly’s mother calls her “baby girl” to be kind of ridiculous as well. This is because I am not sure that any mother would call their daughter “baby girl” as a nickname.

I would definitely give this book four out of four stars because I actually quite liked the book in the end. There are, however, some printer related typos as some of the words have an odd space separating the letters. Because of this I would suggest the book be sent back to the printer to clear up some of these spacing issues. There are also some comma splice problem sentences towards the end of the book. Despite this I would definitely recommend this book to young adult readers of paranormal romances.
