Review by KayK03 -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an action-packed thriller about a teenager, Adam, who possesses extraordinary superhuman powers and doesn’t become truly aware until he meets Carly. Action, suspense, and danger flowed consistently through the book which always kept me on edge through until the end. I found myself to be always surprised by one unpredictable event after another which was a thrill to read.
The story begins with Adam, a quiet, anti-social teenager who experiences a number of strange events and emotions in the world around him. The only human he likes is his mother, JoAnn, until a new student joins his school, Carly. He immediately discovers a deep connection with her as he has never experienced before with anyone else. This connection, however, is not fully understood until new information is revealed about him after he’s involved in a tragic accident. He has always known something was different about him since he was younger and so did his mother. He learns why he’s always felt different since Carly has been in his life. From this point onwards, he learns who he really is and how important it is for him and Carly to not be found or discovered. A number of plot twists, powerful characters and dangerous enemies follow seamlessly.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact the book had a main plot regarding the Iksha and their plan to defeat them once and for all. This plot was followed through consistently and gave a clear goal for the characters within the story. The powers that the characters possess are very intriguing and I was immediately attached to them due to the interesting dynamics within the group. I could definitely see how this adventurous and tense story could appeal to young adults. Having unknown powers is always a far-fetched dream you have as a child and I feel like this story gives an insight into what that would be like. I particularly enjoyed Carly’s character development as she gradually became stronger and started to make scarier decisions which were unlike her. I am keen to read the next book in the series and to see more character development for this exciting group.
On the other hand, at the beginning of the book, there were various aspects which set a creepy tone to the story. I didn’t like Adam’s sociopathic tendencies. I understand that some teenagers at his age can be quite antisocial although, Adam appeared to be very hostile, particularly when calling everyone animals. I found the infatuation with his mother fairly disturbing, to begin with. However, the explanation for it became clearer further in the story. However, I am glad that I followed through as I really enjoyed the events that followed. I believe that if the author introduced Adam’s powers earlier in the book, it would create some context. I can imagine that some readers may have stopped after the first few chapters due to the intensity of Adam’s character, thoughts, and actions. I am glad that I gave the book a chance as I ended up really enjoying it.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Even though the book is categorised as a novel for young adults, I would recommend this story to a more mature audience due to the beginning of the story being quite sinister, with some scenes being quite explicit. Furthermore, there is some terminology in which I was not familiar with at the beginning such as “paroxysms”. I would also recommend this book to those who enjoy reading action and thriller genres. The book was very well-edited as I did not observe any spelling or grammatical errors.
