Review by LadyOfStoriess -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque by Cālix Leigh-Reign really surprised me. I didn't think I would like it so much! I gave it 4 out of 4 stars , and you have to know, that is very rare rating for me. Most books get 3 stars from me, because they don't amaze me, like Opaque did. It just had this special thing within, that did something to me. I read it in two days (which is VERY rare), but I was kind of afraid to write a review. I didn't know what to write, how recommend this book well, so everyone would like to read it.
What is Opaque about? Well, I think you don't have to know much to enjoy it. I started reading it knowing very few things and now I see it was the best way to sink into that book. I discovered everything by myself and I had a great fun doing it. You have to meet characters and explore this special world all by yourself. I can promise you, you will be captive by it the second you will read the prologue (which is epic!). All you have to know about this book, is that we have two main characters: Adam and Carly (you will love them, that's for sure) and one day they discover they are one of the last descendants of some extinct Russian bloodline (sounds awesome, right?). Also, they have special abilities I can tell you nothing about. You have to discover it by yourself. I can add that Adam's abilities are wonderful.I would like to have them.
What genre is Opaque in? I can't decide between sci-fi and fantasy. I think it has some elements from fantasy and some from sci-fi (like special abilities, for example). If you like Marvel universe, you'll like that book. It's not exactly like Marvel, but it's a little similar. I compare those two universes, so you can imagine the atmosphere of Opaque .
As I wrote above, I loved that book. I gave it 4 out of 4 stars because I couldn't find anything I wouldn't like (which again is RARE). Cālix Leigh-Reign (I love this surname) did amazing work! The author created wonderful characters and unobvious plots. I couldn't tell what's going to happen on the next page, so I was always amazed. I was tired of predictable books, and I am really greatful Opaque is not one of them. Also, I liked the tense this book was written in. I'm not a huge fun of writing in the present tense, but here I can't imagine different. It's undoubtedly adventage of Opaque . I was feeling like I was watching a movie. Everything was happening so fast and in front of my eyes. Great idea!
My favourite character was Adam. I was drown to him from the very first pages. He was only sixteen, yet he was so mature and brave. Of course he had moments of self-doubt and vulnerability. I find myself liking those moments the most. They showed the reader that this boy is still a child and he's sometimes afraid of the future and not sure how to act in special moments. Adam was very reliable character.
Second main character was a girl named Carly. I often don't like female characters in books, because they are too silly or too strong to be reliable. In Opaque I really liked Carly! She wasn't too strong, and she wasn't too vulnerable. She was just the perfect balanced character: courageous and sensitive in the right moments. If you are wondering if there is any romance, I can tell you yes, but it's not the most important plot. It's well written, so don't be afraid of it, it won't bother you if you don't like romances in books.
Opaque is full of action and it has interesting plot twists. The book is well edited and the graphic design is awesome. You will find there amazing characters, a little romance and Russian bad scientists. Highly recommend!
