Review by iroc2much2 -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign, is the first book of the Scion saga that details an imaginative world of science fiction, romance, thriller and adventure created by the writer. In this book Adam, a sixteen year old high school senior, is depicted as a disturbed teenager with contempt for everyone but his mother, Jo. He is a young boy who is set apart from his conforming world that seeks perfection. Instead, Adam casts such thoughts of conformity to the side to embrace his deepest, and darkest desires. He delves into the taboo seductive obsessive misplaced feelings for his mother, Jo. Often describing his father as a man that is not worthy of his mother’s love, that only he, Adam is her worthy lover. Adam often refers himself throughout the book as “the wolf in sheep’s clothing”, complying barely enough to get by in his society.
Yet upon the arrival of Carly Wit, another one of the writer’s main characters. Carly who recently moved to the town of Piure, California actually garnishes the attention of Adam. It is an instant electrifying love at first sight, Adam who once thought he only had eyes for his mother now actually attentively seems invested in Carly. One of the many reasons for Adam’s interest peaks in Carly, is one Carly is a polar opposite from Adam. Where Adam shines in all things dark and foreboding, Carly’s calm, and loving demeanor ironically brings out the best in Adam. Carly has an intelligent, strong and spirited nature raised by loving parents who taught her the necessary skills to survive, especially as a Russian mutant descendent with supernatural abilities sets her apart from the norm that Adam has deep contempt for. The contrast between the two gives off a sense of a cat and mouse chase, will they become more than friends or stay as is? It’s a question, only you can figure out once you read it.
This book honestly pulled me in from the beginning and I began to almost savor it like chocolate. Very addicting, normally I finish books in a few days but this one made me want to never finish it because it was that good. From the main characters, Adam and Carly to the creation of the writer’s world this book continually kept me on my toes. What I absolutely loved was the character descriptions and development, I could instantly tell that the writer had more than idea of what direction the main characters should go. Therefore, I found myself able to follow what the writer was trying to convey easily.
As much as I loved the character development and description of Adam and Carly. I found that Mark, Adam’s father was very bland and very one dimensional. I understand that the writer was trying to convey how much Adam hated his father, but I thought that perhaps such perspective from just Adam alone made Mark almost an insignificant character. As if Mark didn’t really exist within the book at all.
In conclusion, I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. Again I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I honestly did not want to let the book finish. I can’t wait for the second book of the saga. I recommend anyone over the age of 13 due to mature content to read this book, if you’re eager for a science fiction, romance and thriller story.
