Review by Chanda Chema -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque takes us on a mission of self-discovery, love and superhumans. It is written by Calix Leigh-Reign.
On one of the many boring days Adam has had in school, this one looks different. There's a new student in his class. This one smells different from the rest of the animals. Her physique captures Adam's attention. She's not like Vikki the nag. She is more composed and unique. She's Carly, a Descendant and one who will be Adam's light. Their encounter is due to fate. They need each other since both of them are a rare species among the humans. They must stick together inorder to defeat the angered Iksha. It is also Carly's task to heal JoAnn.
This book is full of mystery and amazing plot twists. When it starts, it's only Adam's weird home and school life that is up. Things take a different turn when Carly shows up in Adam's class. This sudden turn of events become even better when Adam starts discovering himself and Carly learns the secrets of her origin. The novel is excellently written with both humour, anxiety and tension. There characters are engaging and have naturally flowing conversations. The author gives us a reality in that you celebrate when the main protagonist's side is rejoicing and mourn when they are loosing.
Carly and Adam both possess super powers which is the major influence to their victory. They have no idea why they have to fight in these battles and how their origin is so uncertain. What they know is that someone is chasing them and Carly's DNA is much wanted. Their love is what keeps them stronger together.
There's a theme of friendship. Carly and Adam are helped out by Rye, Evan, Jude, Val and Mariah. Of all of them, Carly's mother advises her to trust Mariah more and give the rest just a small portion of her trust. She's also destined to help Adam find his way and get out of the darkness surrounding him.
This is a story of love and loss. Carly loses both her parents on the same day. Her father is murdered in an ordered execution leaving her devastated and on the same day, Dauma merges with her so that Carly can be stronger. Adam's father is also killed just when Adam has decided that he will make amends and ease the tension between the two of them.
With all the good, I expected Adam's redemption which didn't happen. I felt like Adam got away with his sins unpunished but later dismissed the thought since next in line we have Split Adam. May be he will face his past mistakes in there.
I recommend this book to young adults since most of the content in this novel is for them, Carly's and Adam's romance being one of them. This book has an incredibly awesome plot that made me envy the author's imagination. How she came up with the controversial blood lines was just amazing. The editing was also perfect making me settle for nothing less than a 4 out of 4 stars.
