Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a young adult novel and science fiction/ fantasy novel. It takes your through the teenage lives of a boy Adam, and a girl Carly. The book has tones of dark and light and trends towards the darker side for most of the story. The point of views is told from the charters giving more depth and insight.

The book starts off in Adam’s perspective and takes you through his troubles giving insight into a dark mind and dark desires of a teenager with sociopathic tendencies. The author hints at and brings forth some societal unforgivable thoughts and feelings Adam is dealing with driving forth all his difference to an even greater extent. As Adam continues to struggle, he meets Carly who is a transfer student and brings light into his life.
Carly is a character that has more positivity yet is confused by Adam’s character and dislikes him at first. Carly is the light and strength to Adam’s character. As the story moves forward, they find a curiosity toward each other and build a friendship and romance. Carly find outs she has much more in common with Adam then they expected and can help answer man questions for him. They are able to figure out a deeper connection to a shared history of supernatural abilities and find relationships they have had are not what they seemed to be. The story traces the characters lineage and Adam and Carly are able to find more answers about who they both are.

As the book deepens Adam’s darkness and violence is shed and put aside for his love for Carly grows and he is able to embrace more relationships and trade off his disdain for society. Carly is able to take on more the one perspective and is able to grow stronger in her own role.
The author also brings in some minor characters of best friends and family that build interested element and build detail into the main character humanizing there experiences even more and adding to the story line.

My favorite part of the book was the elements of tracing ones lineages and finding answers to the characters abilities and where they came from. I felt the author did a great job with they story and details I felt it fell a little flat when starting with a sociopath in the beginning and turning his character completely sympathetic. I felt that some of they darker theme his character was not truly dealt with and were overlooked once meeting Carly.
The author has brought elements of violence, inappropriate sexuality or sexual violence, and other minor sexual elements and promiscuity. With this in mind I would caution younger readers that would be impressionable (16+) and would recommend to a mature audience not sensitive to these types of scenes.

I would definitely recommend Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign. I would give the book 3 out of 4 stars. It looks professionally edited and was very nicely written. The book was highly entertaining and enjoyable to read.
