Opaque: Scion Saga Book 1, by Calix Reign-Leigh, is an exciting science fiction story, with strong elements of romance and adventure. Relationships are at the heart of this book about two young people discovering their heritage, and the abilities that come from their bloodlines. Adam is a damaged young man, who is going through something far worse than normal teen angst. Carly, our more likable protagonist, is easy to love. She at first dislikes Adam, and he dislikes her despite a strong attraction. Adam, and Carly are brought together against their will in a fight for their lives. They make new friends and Adam’s heart begins to thaw both for Carly and humanity in general. The two discovered that they are part of something far bigger than anything they have ever known.

Adam is a nihilist and possibly a sociopath. He is easy to hate, from his nihilistic thoughts about people being animals, to his feelings for his Mother. His incestuous fantasies are hard to get through, but so well-written for shocking power. The scene with Terry took me a long time to get past. That I eventually came to care about Adam is a sign of the skill of the author.
Carly is a great character. Strong and kind in a way that diffuses Adam’s aggression. I’d love to know more about her lineage.

I also particularly liked some lesser characters like Carly’s friend Kane, and even poor clueless Vicki. I really enjoyed the character Katreena, despite her bitter, dark, nature. The scientists we're really fascinating. My only complaint would be that we don’t learn as much about their motivations as I would have liked. As a history, and culture buff I would have loved more information about the Russian connection of the Descendants. I hope in the future books of this series we learn about other bloodlines.

My favorite part of the book is Carly’s ability to humanize Adam. The author gave took on a difficult task in taking Adam from a sociopath to sympathetic. My least favorite part was Terry’s scene. It’s as difficult to accept as his incestuous fantasies are hard to tolerate. I have to admit I had a guilty laugh at Adam’s Sociopath Handbook that he followed. It was just so ridiculous, even though his actions were very serious.

I think any fan of coming of age stories would really enjoy this book. The science-fiction is sharp and interesting, as are the relationships, which really have to be compelling to keep my interest. I would suggest this story for any mature older teen, such as over sixteen. I would only caution readers who are very sensitive to sexual violence, or inappropriate sexuality to avoid this book. Also, overly impressionable teenage readers should read this with guidance. All adults interested would highly enjoy this story.

Otherwise, I would highly recommend Opaque: Scion Saga Book 1[i/] to any reader interested in the topic. It’s an excellent book and I will be eager to read the next book in this series. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It’s a beautifully written and professionally edited book with strong interesting characters who grow and change. An enjoyable and powerful read.

I often really enjoy young adult novels and this one has some aspects that make it seem a little more mature, so this could be a good quick read for me! Thanks for the review, I'll have to check this book out!
