Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign, the first in the Scion Saga, follows young Adam through a captivating journey as he discovers who is he and where he comes from. Leigh-Reigns combines romance with Sci-Fi to give a book you won’t want to put down. This young adult novel covers everything from mutated humans with biokinretic abilities and Russian spies to true love and action. To think this is only the first in a season makes me very excited for what is to come.

Adam, a dark, broody teenager, is introduced at the very beginning of the book. The introduction easily leads readers to believe that this boy is disturbed and very well could be a sociopath. He is very private, rude to those around him, and prone to suggestive thoughts of other people (some may shock you). However, everything changes when a new girl comes to town. Carly. Her presence alone sparks a change in Adam that drives him wild. After their eyes met for the first time, they were sucked into a romance like no other. It’s like they were made to find each other.

Everything seems like it is going perfect for Adam and Carly until one day, Carly’s phone rings and suddenly, the two are forced to come together and fight for their lives as well as the lives of those they hold dearest. It is now that Carly must help Adam face his inner darkness and overcome it if they are to survive. It is hard enough for Carly to help him face the darkness, but she also must help him learn to discover and control his newfound abilities. All of this while Adam is struggling to determine his identity and how he fits in this new world that he has been introduced into. It parallels real life in many ways, where many young adults in this time are forced to cope with balancing work, school, social life, and more all while trying to discover themselves.

Leigh-Reigns keeps readers on the edge of their seats, hanging from every word, in this novel. While there were some spelling errors, they did not draw away from the integrity of the story. With these errors, I hardly noticed them the first time around but caught them upon second glance. That is how transfixed I was by the story-telling. Switching being Adam and Carly’s points of view gives the readers insight into the development of both characters, although I think Adam developed much more than Carly did, however that is to be expected as he was the main character.

I rate Opaque a solid 4 out of 4 stars, despite the few spelling errors that I noticed because this novel did what any great novel should do. It pulls you into a whole new world and away from your life. This novel was a double bonus because the world it pulls you into is familiar but new at the same time. It has the ability to make your mind wonder about what could be going on that we have no idea about. That is perhaps, what I liked most about this book. I cannot think of anything I liked least, other than the fact that it ended. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read or Sci-Fi, regardless of age.

I often really enjoy young adult novels and this one has some aspects that make it seem a little more mature, so this could be a good quick read for me! Thanks for the review, I'll have to check this book out!
