Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a Young Adult Fantasy novel, following the story of 16-year-old Adam Caspian. Adam has the power to control the wind by using his core energy. He has lustful desires towards his mother and behaves like a borderline sociopath at the beginning of the story. Arriving from Minnesota to escape the IKSHA, a Russian group made by scientists, Carly is not expecting to meet her soul mate in the small town of Piure, California. She is instantaneously drawn to Adam with an unexplainable intensity. Together they learn the secret behind Adam's emotions, powers, intentions and his true ancestry. Did they escape the IKSHA? Were they able to identify the reason for Adam's disturbing behavior?

What I disliked most about this book were the first few chapters. They were dark and shocking. For instance, Adam’s sexual description of his mother made me very uneasy. His hatred towards his father and the incestual desire towards his mother reminded me of the tale of Oedipus.

Also, I hated his encounter with Terry. I understand why the author chose to write such a scene. It helps in building Adam's character arc. But the inexplicit sexual assault and the unnecessary kidnap disturbed me. Since the book is recommended for young adults, the author should refrain from portraying or justifying sociopathic behavior. For instance, Adam states that his classmates are like drones and their mundane life makes him exasperated. This may affect the minds of innocent teens.

There are so many things I liked in this book. I loved the relationship between Adam and Carly. I liked how the author slowly portrayed the change within Adam’s thoughts due to his newfound love. The friendship between Kane and Carly was envious. The description of their eyes and powers was very interesting. The narrative was clear and understandable. For instance, I was able to picture the battle scene at the end of the book with the detailed narration.

I would like to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the things I disliked are very few compared to the things I loved in this book. The book seems to be professionally edited. I would recommend this book for young adults, but people who are sensitive about assault, rape, murder, and incest may not enjoy this book. Also, there is a hint of a sexual relationship between the characters, which may be frowned upon by the parents. I think even mature adults would enjoy this book. Fans of Divergent series, Hunger Games series, Shatter me series and Secret Circle series would surely enjoy this book.
