Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a captivating story about a young man named Adam who possess unique skills. The book is categorized as a young-adult novel. However, I would recommend this book to a more mature audience. There are some explicit scenes and the use of mild profanity. Still, there are some rather intense scenes in the early pages of the book around abduction and incest. However, the content calms down a lot after the first third of the book.

Adam is a 16-year-old high school student who lives in the state of California with his mother and father. He is not a fan of the human-race, referring to them as animals early on. The only person he has a connection with is his mother. That is until Carly comes along. Carly comes onto the scene as a new student at Adams high school. She has recently come to town to live with her Aunt Vera. Adam and Carly make a strong connection and learn they are more alike than they first thought. Though the story starts as more of a drama, it quickly turns to an action-packed thriller—full of supporting characters, plot twists, and character development.

What I liked most about this book is it has a solid plot. The story holds your attention and keeps you wanting to continue reading. The level of detail is well balanced. The details are not overdone and also not dry at the same time. You get a solid picture of what is going on in the scenes but are not overwhelmed, making the story very fluid to read.

What I did not like about the book was the beginning. The mood set at the beginning of the book is slightly creepy. I am glad I did not stop there and gave the book a chance. In the end, I loved the book. However, I feel that the majority of readers would have stopped after the first few chapters. Though these early chapters were a considerable part of the plot. They could have had more context put around the elements earlier on.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the book and rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy action, drama, and thrillers. The book was well-edited, as I did not find any spelling or grammatical errors. I am eager to read the next book in the series! Opaque is just the first book of the trilogy.

This sounds like a book I would enjoy. I will have to add it to my list of books to read. I glad you mentioned that you liked it better as the story went on.
