When starting “Opaque” by Calix Leigh-Reign, there is a note from the author. It’s kind of like a preface, but only in a sense that she is describing the main character beforehand. In the note she explains that it’s always good to “keep an open mind”. I am so glad that I was able to take her advice. I like to think that I normally go into things with an open mind, but I’ll admit the first two chapters had me concerned about what I had chosen to read.

I almost didn’t continue reading the book to be honest. That being said, I wanted to see if the book continued the way I thought it would. Or, if indeed I had judged it too quickly. Upon continuing the book I realized that I had become immersed in the story line. Nothing was at all what it seemed to be, and dare I say it has become one of my favorite books. It takes you on an adventure you didn’t even realize you wanted to be apart of. It really felt like I was getting to know these characters personally, and I wanted to learn more.

The story circles around a high school student named Adam. For lack of a better explanation, he basically hates everything and everyone. His character is aloof, misunderstood, and yet kind of popular at the same time. The thing is, something is very different about Adam, but even he doesn’t know what it is. The way this story unravels is unlike anything I have ever read before. I found myself quite literally on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next.

The twists were endless, and some parts were down right jaw dropping. However, when something gets explained, it’s like a light in your brain clicks on. Making you wonder why you didn’t see it before. I absolutely love books and movies that are like this. It was also exciting to know this is book one of her Scion series and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

I give “Opaque” 4 out of 4 stars. Not only is it extremely well written, but it pulls you into the book the way a great story should. This book's target audience is young adults. I would definitely recommend this book to adults as well as young adults. It’s a supernatural thrill ride with romance as well. The romance scenes aren’t exactly on the innocent side so I would recommend mature young adults.
