Review by Pallavi -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a splendid work of fantasy, book one of the Scion Saga. The author has woven a magnificent story of a high school senior from the town Piure in Southern California, Adam Caspian. A mere sociopath, who considers his fellow beings nothing more than animals. On the verge of puberty or more appropriately standing at the door of adolescence, this sixteen year old teen keeps on struggling with the darker part of his self. He shares a very hard and constrained relation with his father, Mark and often feels attracted passionately towards his mother, JoAnn. Her appearance always make him feel as of being his own age and on contrary he was unable to find out even a single matching trait with his father. Events turn up when under some accidental circumstances he messes up with the life of a girl, Terry. His guilt ridden soul yet remains surprised at the things going around him either from the blood coming out from his nostrils when he wakes up from nightmares or from the things spread around. The story keeps going around this desperate guy who was keen to develop telekinetic abilities until he meets up Carly, a newcomer to the school from Silver Springs, Minnesota.
Barrels of secrets are poured up and the story takes a new leap when this girl, Carly makes him feel that something is causing a great deal of inclination towards her. But this proves to be something more than what one guessed and the author opens the door of fantasy coming up with a peculiar group of human beings which are called as descendants. These are seven Russian ancestries comprising of individuals with biokeneretic powers, something supernatural in our terms. These powers were accounted to some sort of genetic mutations which helped them to awaken their core. But the descendants are constantly being hunted down by Iksha, a group of scientists. For their great genomic line, several generations were captured and executed by the Iksha after extraction of their genetic material. The Iksha did all these to satisfy their greed of superpowers. Hence the survival of these descendants was under great threat. Carly and Adam for now had fallen badly in love with. Actually the advent of Carly in Adam’s life proved to be a turning point in the story. They along with Dauma, Carly’s mother worked a way out for the protection of their lineage but how, this is really worth reading.
The editing is good which is quite obvious. The book is simply alluring for fantasy lovers. It’s a Sci-Fi with the power to bind the reader till the end. What I felt most appreciable about the book was the sturdiness of the characters, their actual build up, their worthiness. The lead role character, Adam , a spoiled brat, how he grows in a responsible, daring individual who can go to any extent for his Carly and also his mother after energizing his core. Similarly, Carly Wit has a full command over her emotions and the way she transforms using her biokeneretic powers using them up to max at a time and bringing them down at the other. Her cinnamon-apple smell even overwhelmed me. One more thing worth mentioning is the character Dauma, her description, her powers, how she guided her daughter with tender love and even Adam. Actually from her arrival in the story uptil her merger, everything regarding her was mesmerizing. At times when one feels as if going to be bored if continues further, the next very moment some character flows up with the specific super power to keep going on. Also, when the descendants tried to take over their well deserved revenge against the Iksha, it appeared to me something ought to be done.
What made me feel a bit annoying was the attitude Adam showed towards his mother at first, the lurking attraction he felt but it melted away completely when the author cited the reason being the youth serum prepared by the Iksha using the extracted DNA from the captured descendents. Yet again, when the truth of death of the poor girl, Terry was when revealed in front of Carly, it was not justified for it to be taken casually but the brutality showed by the Iksha was really ruthless as several lineages were made extinct. Moreover Carly showed the same composed behaviour even when her parents were concerned.
I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book kept me drowned until it was finished and it was hard to drop it down even when I finished it up. For the ones like me who could not bear to come out of the fantasy, we should surely opt for the next two in the series.
