Review by angeladawn8883 -- The Crystilleries of Echoland
The Crystilleries of Echoland written by Dew Pellucid.
3 out of 4 stars
This book was a little hard to get into and confusing at first then became very interesting. There are some pretty strange names for the different characters mixed in with names of well-known fictional characters. This made it a little tough to keep the characters sorted out. It is a fantasy type story and would appeal to anyone who enjoys mystical creatures as well as adventure and mystery. There are no instances of Curse words but there are several occasions of violent situations.
Most of the characters in the book are children. It would be good for a middle school aged child who could picture themselves in the story, though it would be enjoyable to older readers also. Anyone who likes mystical lands and creatures will enjoy reading this book. The scenery is described well it makes you feel like you are experiencing the adventure right along with the characters. There is a prince and a king and many bad guys out to get them. The characters must use all their cunning and strength to overcome the obstacles which they encounter.
In the end they succeed in their adventure and have a happy ending. It seems like the author was trying to take a Harry Potter type story and mix it with The Lord of the Rings and Once upon a Time. The different modes of traveling and the creatures who were trying to keep control over the characters all had a Harry Potter type feeling.
At first I didn’t like it. There were details that needed more explanation. It started out like a book that was a sequel and you missed somethings that had been explained in an earlier edition of the story. If it had been explained better the backstory that started the whole adventure to begin with, it would have been much easier to read. Some of the characters being named after common fictional characters that made it somewhat confusing to read. Had I been the author I would have just given all the characters names that were original and not so similar that it made them hard to keep straight.
Overall it was a good story and adventure and I enjoyed the mystical land and creatures the characters encounter. There were many neat details like self-cleaning clothes and magical books. All these things come together to make and interesting story. I like that there was no profanity or sexual content even though there was mild violence and killing.
