Will Cleary and his twin sister went missing when they were two years old. Their disappearance is listed in the “Gravestone Book” along with everyone else who disappeared. There were no witnesses to any of these kidnappings. All the cases were the same. The people seemed to vanish into thin air, without leaving any clues. The only exception was that Will came back, alone. His parents have spent the last ten years searching for his twin.
Soon Will finds out the secret to where he was. In the pond outside his house, there is a door to a parallel realm, called Echoland, where our mirrored images live. They are echoes and we are their sounds. When a person is born, so is an echo, but no one can see the echo because their skin is invisible. The echo gets washed away into Echoland. Echoland is a dark place full of mystery and secrets. Echoes live by the Law of Death, which says that if a sound dies, then their echo will be killed. That being said, if someone wants an echo dead, then they murder the sound and by Law of Death, the echo will be murdered too. The true prince of Echoland wants to rid the realm of the Law of Death. His father, the king, disappeared and now his uncle has unrightfully taken the throne. The prince needs to clear his father’s name by his thirteenth birthday, so he can take over the throne, and he is relying on Will to help him. Can Will find a way to save Echoland and still manage to keep himself alive?
The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid is a murder mystery and fantasy novel. It follows Will’s journey into Echoland where he makes some great friends and uncovers the truth to his and his sister’s disappearance. The book was intense and exciting to read. With one mystery after another, there was never a boring moment. The idea of a parallel universe was interesting, and I think that aspect of the novel would be appealing to other readers as well.
It was nice how the author made friendship a large part of the story line. Will would not have been able to solve the mystery of the murder, or even survive, without the help of his friends. The author did a great job putting detail into the book. The description of the see-through people, the glowing waterweed, and all other aspects of Echoland made it easy to visualize while reading. Also, I thought that it was clever how the author was a character.
I give The Crystilleries of Echoland 4 out of 4 stars . This is because I found the story very suspenseful and entertaining. The book is aimed at young readers around middle-school age. However, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery and fantasy. It did include some detailed writing about death and murder, so if you’re someone who is sensitive to that, then maybe this book isn’t for you. It was exceptionally well edited and age appropriate as there was no offensive language.
