Melissa and Kasho is a book that is all about dealing with deep feelings in one of the most important time of life, the youth. Melissa is a young woman who had her childhood affected by abusive and controlling actions of her parents. She moves to a school in Florence with a friend and she begins her journey of self-knowledge, and she meets an important character in the plot: Kasho, the spirit.

The protagonist’s past is constantly reminiscent even if she is far away from home. Melissa is always daydreaming about what happened to her and does not know how to deal with sadness, regret, and fear that it brings to her. Kasho was decisive in her path and because of him, she was able to discover her inner voice and together they shared past agonies that helped to write a new story for their lives.

The writer approaches very well how those dilemmas are written in the plot, so the characters have unique and real characteristics. Also, one of the important points of this book is that even the characters may have suffered because of other people, human relationships are also important to heal the wounds, as presented in the friendship between Melissa and Daisy, Contessa, her brother and Kasho.

Despite all sentimentality, the book addresses science fiction topics, but I found the writer’s attempt to incorporate this element with the romance a bit inaccurate. The way Kasho was first introduced to Melissa was a bit abrupt and the purpose of his visit was quickly mentioned, so I think that it could have been written in parts to give a bit more mystery to the plot and organic sensation to the reader.

Melissa and Kasho was an interesting and profound book to read, I enjoyed all the trama around Melissa and her path to understanding herself with her uncommon friend. Despite some aspects, I evaluate 3 out 4 stars for the original content presented in the work.
