Heartaches 3-Bad Boy Vibes by H. M. Irving is the first book I’ve read in this series. I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. It is a love story with a complicated back story that is difficult to follow at times. It goes beyond confusing sentences due to structure. I think many of the characters are not fully developed and so when they come up in the story I had to keep going back to try to figure out who they were. Families contain step brothers and more than one, so I got lost in how people were related. At times that really mattered because of a history that was unclear. Perhaps the author relies to heavily on the reader following the sequence of the books and so by reading Heartaches 1-2 I might know more of the past.

The main characters, Rafe and Anna have secrets that they keep from each other and the reader. This adds to confusion of the plot. It also adds to the suspense, which I like. I anticipated a different ending and that is a good thing. The topics and characters are contemporary including drug smuggling, drones, and gays coming out.

This book is enhanced by humor. At times it seems like a thriller and then the author adds a little levity to relieve the tension. The dialogue is dotted with clever comebacks and allows the reader to warm up to certain characters. The friendship between Anna and Pat was the most believable. I’m not sure how long they’ve known each other, but their relationship was well developed by the author. I identified with their interactions the most.

The most graphic sexual scene seemed to be gratuitous. It didn’t add to the story. In fact, it seemed implausible that it would have the effect it did in the story line. I lost my interest in the book after that and had to force myself to finish the story. I still had enough interest to see if it ended the way I thought it would. I never fully trusted Rafe and still don’t.

If there is a fourth book I may read it just to confirm my suspicions about Rafe. And that alone should make H. M. Irving happy. I hope the author has a professional proof the work because spelling and grammar errors are annoying and enough to make me stop reading any book.
