I have chosen "Heartaches 2: Bad Boy Vibes" by H.M. Irwing for a review because I really enjoy reading stories about love, sex and all encompassing them feelings.

The cover of the book, along with the steamy title, suggests an interesting read, if maybe a bit cliched.

Both main characters are broken souls with wounds still raw from their horrible, not so distant, past. They both try to heal each other through love, passion and simple being there for another. Add to this a gay boy who is afraid of coming out, and you got quite interesting mix.

Unfortunately, what you read above are just about the only positives about the story. Whilst the idea behind the book is a decent one, then the way the author wrote it is way below standard that romance readers got used to. It is a hard work to read this novel and that should be the very last thing a love story fiction to be.

From the beginning of the book it is clear that if the reader hasn't read the first one in the series, there is a very good chance that hers/his confusion would obliterate the reading experience, at least in the beginning. There is no explanation about events that take place in the previous part of the series, apart from giving full names of the main characters, and why the second one starts with this particular sequence of events.

The author didn’t give a chance for characters to express themselves, and therefore for the reader to get to know them through their own words and actions. This makes the main heroes feel flat and without empathy. The dialogues are kept to a bare minimum, instead the story is filled with a voice of a narrator and endless descriptions. This slows the read down dramatically, up to the point that it is really difficult to keep reading.

The plot is boring and couple of times simply doesn’t make sense. It makes the reader want to put the book down and let it get covered by endless amount of dust.

The language used is not typical for a romance novel - it may seem too advanced and complicated for an average reader. The author kept using words that have their place in the dictionary rather than modern romance novel.

The number of adverbs is at the highest possible. The author has taken the usual writer’s mantra "show not tell" and thrown it vehemently in the bin.

There is a tremendous amount of repetitions, not only single words, but even whole phrases only a couple of sentences apart. It feels that if the author would remove them, the book would suddenly shrank to half its current size.

Several times in the book author put different characters point of views in the same paragraph, causing reader to actually stop reading and figure out who thinks what.

All in all, not an easy read that the average romance reader could expect from the title, cover and a blurb.
Just to give you an idea what will you be against in this book I jotted down some awkward parts of the text. Have a look for yourself:

"She turned to face him, her gaze searching, ever concerned as they rushed over him." - who rushed over who ?

"...and Anna was arrested once more, watching rivulets of water splash down his throat as he drank thirstily." - who can actually see the water going down a person's throat with their own eyes ?

"A muddy hue swept in past the crystal green to awash it in ebony." - now this one feels like it has been taken straight from a poem, and not a good poem as well.
Whilst this type of writing would be acceptable in a classical novel, in today’s era of quick reads it simply doesn’t have its place. Today, with the aid of the Internet, the readers can move from one book to the next with a simple click of a button. Authors cannot afford to write in a historical style of long descriptions and a very few dialogues.

Considering everything above, my rating for this book has to be as low as 1 out of 4.

The text requires not only a very extensive edit, but also in parts should be re-written to achieve a flawless, interesting and gripping read, which I’m sure was what the author tried, and failed, to achieve.
