Heartaches is the first among three romance book series that tells the story of two sexual assault victims. We follow Anna and Rafe on their journey to rebuild themselves as they seek some justice and closure. Over the course of their difficult journey to recovery, they find that their search for justice is not as forthcoming as they had hoped. Instead, they find solace, understanding, and love in each other.
Anna is the voluptuous, female victim who has to pay for her brother's debt through a sick arrangement between him and the Preston men (one of them being her boyfriend of six months). She then becomes sexually assaulted by them as a form of compensation for the debt.
Rafe is the gorgeous, kind hearted, ex-army who can't help but notice the assault signs on Anna immediately when he meets her. He can't help his unavoidable instinct to help her, being a rape victim himself. He decides to act and take matters into his own hands to help her seek the justice she deserves.
It's detailed account before, during, and after the assault, delivers excruciatingly precise insights of rape cases and covers the scope of feelings the victims feel afterwards. As a reader, I really felt for my characters. This book gave me incredibly great feelings of sadness, sympathy, and even anger at the unfairness of it all.
It also brings into light the depressing nature of the aftermath of rape victims and how hard it is for them to seek justice afterwards. It shows how it's even worse if the assailant happens to be in a position of power. Also brought into focus, is the underlying feelings of helplessness and insecurity that soon follows during and after the rape.
It is encouraging when Anna and Rafe show signs of recovery when they find themselves in military school. Through the depths of pain there's only the warm rays of recovery. They find a bit of peace and happiness there and can finally love each other freely. Theirs is a unique kind of love that can only happen between two lovers who've shared the same kind of pain. It's different and it's beautiful.
I rate this book 3 out of 4. This book has it's own captivating appeal as you follow the two very real, yet flawed protagonists who want to understand the twisted turn of their fates. It uncovers the real nature behind rapes, drugs, betrayal, and the justice system. Though a very good read, I do not recommend this book to the weak hearted and the easily-triggered. It contains strong rape themes, depression themes, and insecurity themes. I definitely want to recommend this book to mature readers who do not mind it's erotic nature and strong language.
