Heartaches is a romantic novel by H. M. Irwing that narrates a story of two broken souls that find healing and love in one another. A story that reflects that it truly doesn't matter how flawed one is, in the end they are still worthy of being loved. The two main characters, namely; Anna Walter Simmons and Rafael Louis Brown, divulge their painful pasts that have left them scarred and broken as the book progresses. We see how the events of a tragedy can turn into a blessing of some sorts.
Anna undergoes a terrible experience - she is used sexually by her boyfriend, his brother and father as payment for her stepbrother's debt. As the reality of the incident hits her, she goes through a phase whereby she wears long dresses when going out and locks herself in her room when she's at home. She withdraws from those around her as she tries to figure out whether the whole incident was consensual even though she was drugged. After a few days, her mother manages to drag her out of the house to some party where Anna reunites with her old crush and finds herself revealing all the issues that have been eating at her for the past few days. To her relief, he does not judge her, but instead offers to assist her in seeking justice.
On their pursuit for justice, they incur a few glitches here and there. Also Anna and Rafael find themselves falling for one another but due to insecurities brought forth by their horrific pasts, they both feel unworthy of one another's love. Anna finds herself being more and more dependent on Rafael as each day passes. The very same insecurities that they thought made them unworthy, are the same factors that draws them closer, that lead them to fall for one another and lead to the development of mutual respect for their individual strength and beauty that is complimented by their flaws.
We see a number of concepts come into play. There is a display of betrayal whereby Anna finds out that she was sold by her stepbrother and the fact that she was raped by her boyfriend. Also, we see a lot of sexual abuse come into light as well as abuse of power by those in authority. Irwing highlights these when Rafael relates to Anna the events that led to him returning home and the theme is also highlighted in Anna's story. There are also a number of other themes that can be seen as the book goes on such as the development of love and trust.
I loved reading the book although I found it to be too explicit. It teaches the reader a lot about life like the fact that even though life deals you a bad hand, life still goes on, I rate the book a 3 out of 4 because I think it is just that great.
