I rate this book at two out of four starsHeartaches 2 is in the genre of romantic novels, telling the story of Anna and Rafael, two individuals caught up in a web of love, brought on about by a similar traumatic past. The story starts with a prologue, a nightmare scene, which brings out the various conflicts that assault the couple in the novel. Both have been abused by the same characters and in a bid to try and escape from it, they seem instead to be drawn right back into the center of the storm. As the story unfolds, we are treated to a big fight between Rafe and Eric, on the one hand and Anna and the Preston's, on the other. In both instances the pair emerge victorious. For once it seems like the two lovers can now put the past behind them and move on. But in a twist of fate, Rafe is ambushed by Eric and in the process, Anna is forced to drop off the case against the Preston family, something which does not auger well with Rafe when he eventually learns about it. Another thread of the story involves Anna's best friend Pat, who is gay but has never revealed this to his wealthy parents. Anna confronts him and in the end they agree to visit his parents for the big announcement. Things take a turn at Pat's home when he falls out with his darling, Dan. Next Rafe's Aunt lands a bombshell with an announcement of her impending marriage to Peter Preston. Matters get worse when Rafe's heritage is exposed, leading to problems between Rafe and Anna. The novel finally ends at Ned's home, where the wedding is meant to be held, where it turns out revenge is in the air. Ned is out to get Eric for the death of his brother, Anna and Rafe are out to get Eric and the Prestons' and a maid, Suzie, is gunning for David Seabon. In this mix, only Pat gets what he has always wanted, Dan Andrews. And as the story concludes, the reader is left in suspense on whether the revenge plots, will succeed or not, as the story is left for another later publication.
The novels is well told, exploring a delicate and troubling subject of love in all its various forms. The subject of rape; of both sexes, and abusive partners are discussed. homosexuality of gays and lesbians too end up in the mix of romance. H.M. Irwing the author of the novel shows how all this differing partnerships, revolve around individuals and the society. In the story of Anna, her best friend Yasmin, her step brother Brian and her step father John all play a role in what develops into her bad relation, with Matt Preston. And in the case of Matt, his brother and father, too are involved in bringing the affair to an end. Rafe is abused by his superior, Eric. While Pat too, is in a fix, his parents even going as far as to arrange a bride for him. All this is narrated very well in a captivating way through the story of Heartaches 2.
The use of the prologue, to open the story, is another beautiful style employed by the author. It becomes immediately clear, the scope of the novel. The reader is at once informed in a synopsis-kind of way, what the story is all about. The greatest drawback to using a prologue, is if the story fades out, from the high expectations raised in the beginning. In this case, the writer does not disappoint. He maintains the interest and desire of the reader to continue reading to the end of the novel.
Something else that is superb about this novel is the sudden and surprising, twists and turns, the plot makes. This keeps the momentum of the story, driving the readers imaginations into high gear, trying to cope with the new twists that confront him. In short, this is a novel in which the writer has excelled in well in his telling.
On the other hand, a glaring shortcoming of this novel is in its shoddy editing. In actual fact, the writer seems not to have bothered with the simple though critical aspect of going through his work before releasing it to be read. It is full of mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling and even formatting. The following is an example of a few of these errors that permeate throughout the book;
- Page 5 of chapter 1, ...victory had never...
- Page 6, ... Rafe looked ready...
- Page 6, goldenbrown
- Page 10, ais
- Page 10, ... too strong for such trivial term
- Page 12, espwecially
- Page 15, ahold
- Page 15, wellsculpted
- Page 24, chapter 2, turft
- Page 29, it instead of in
- Page 62, hernose
All the above being just a small sample of many more mistakes within the novel. This poor editing made the reading of the novel to be tedious and difficult, forcing the reader to constantly break the flow, to continuously try to fathom what the writer meant, at any particular point in his telling of his story. This spoiled the entire reading experience of the book.
Owing to the lack of any noticeable proofreading or editing of the novel and the intense labor it entailed just to get to the end of the book, I rate this book as two out of four stars The reason why I rate it thus is because though the writer has succeeded in tackling a tricky subject with knowledge, expertise, humor and candor, the writer has nevertheless failed in the cardinal role of writing-communication! Without being a perfectionist, proper formatting; where sentences and words are not left hanging, common spelling mistakes are avoided, tenses and other grammatical errors are corrected, all contribute to the reading thrill and enjoyment of the experience. By failing in this, despite the story being captivating, the book failed to excite me and thus communicate with me.
