Bad Boy Vibes is the first novel in the romantic Heartaches trilogy, written by H.M. Irwing. It describes the complicated journey of an 18-year-old girl named Anna Simmons who, after her step-brother Brian murders his own father, sets out to try and have a normal life. However, after being betrayed by her boyfriend and his family in a way she will never be able to let go of, she is distraught and keeps to herself in her bedroom for a while.
Later, Anna attends an event with her mother, and Rafe ends up convincing Anna to tell him all about what happened. Now held under some sort of unspoken pact with Rafe, Anna stays by his side as they attempt to chase away their problems at a military base. What kind of drama will start when four unwanted guests follow them to the base camp, three of which are trying to take Anna back for themselves, and one who has been terrorizing Rafe’s memories?
There were quite a few things I enjoyed about Bad Boy Vibes, to be completely honest. For starters, Irwing has the ability to genuinely hook my attention and make me increasingly more eager to find out what happens next. Even after I'm done reading, I am looking forward to reading the second book in this trilogy. I also appreciated how the story had multiple unpredictable plot twists that suddenly proved a crucial point, or that pieced a large chunk of the story together. All the while, Irwing put in just the right number of twists so the story wasn't confusing, but also so that the novel was intriguing.
Unfortunately, as with every novel or book out there, Bad Boy Vibes also has its downsides. Don't get me wrong: the story flowed well, and although it was short with a mere 146 pages, it still told a long story. However, I lost count of how many spelling, grammatical, and/or punctuation errors I found in each chapter while reading this novel. It does not look professionally edited at all. There were also 2 or 3 paragraphs spread out in the story that were difficult to understand. I had to read over the same lines of text at least 10 times each before I could finally make sense of it. Also, while I was reading a few of the more explicit chapters, sometimes, the characters’ actions would become tiring and predictable. When I began to read these select few chapters, I was starting to become repelled by the novel, and my urgency to keep reading died down a bit.
For the above reasons, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This is because although the plot was fantastic, the characters’ actions were relatable, and it was easy to understand, there were still repetitive scenes and paragraphs, countless spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, and some of the characters’ actions were continuously predictable. These items lowered my star rating because there wasn’t anything wrong with the storyline itself, but the way it was written irritated me throughout the entire book. If Irwing had fixed all of the spelling errors (for example, typing “want’s” instead of “wants” on page 7, or typing “recognise” instead of “recognize” on page 9), made the long and repetitive chapters easier to read and more clear, and worked a little bit on some of the tiring scenes/chapters, then I would have given Bad Boy Vibes a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
This story contains graphic scenes and descriptions of, but not limited to, sexual activities, sexual intercourse, use of drugs, rape, and mild violence. This book is considered NSFW. I would personally recommend Bad Boy Vibes to anybody who is mature enough to read about the scenes and descriptions mentioned above. Reader's discretion is advised.
