Terror, abuse, rape, and a longing to move on from the past causes Rafael Brown and Anna Simmons to lean on one another. Rafael Brown and Anna Simmons both know what it is like to be abused, which creates an understanding between them. Their relationship and their love for one another was powerful, but the past was demanding for attention. Heartaches 2 by H.M. Irwing explores the turmoil that Anna and Rafael fight to overcome.
Rafe and Anna live on the military base where they live their lives together. Although they seem happy and content the truth quickly comes to light. Rafe’s abuser is also on the base which forces him to relive his horrendous past. Rafe wants revenge but soon realizes that revenge won’t stop the night terrors. Anna’s abusers use Rafe to stop her from pressing charges against them. Anna thought it would all stop if she agreed, but she was wrong. Matt Preston was Anna’s boyfriend, but what Anna didn’t know was the horrible plan he set in motion. Now Peter Preston, the father of Matt has tricked Rafe’s aunt into marriage. What will this news do to Anna and Rafe’s relationship? Upon this time, Rafe learns the truth about his father, but the truth does not set Rafe free from his own anguish.
H.M. Irwing captures the emotions of the characters by symbolizing the turmoil they went through with darkness. At the beginning of the novel, readers are introduced to the horrors of darkness from Anna’s point of view. Darkness in different forms, are seen throughout the entire novel and allows readers to sympathize with the character’s past. I like how the author was able to jump between the past and the present within the lives of the characters. This allows the reader to fully grasp and understand the restlessness that Anna and Rafe hassle with. The plot takes many unexpectant twist and turns, which has the capability of taking readers on a wild ride.
I did find grammatical errors throughout the novel, but it didn’t deter me from the good storyline. This novel is the second in a three book series, which allows readers to gain a personal understanding of the character’s development and the hardships they continuously go through. Anna and Rafe had to learn to accept one another and to not allow their past from destroying each other in the process of moving forward.
After reading and analyzing this book, I decided to rate it a 3 out of 4 stars. Although it had some errors throughout, I believe that H.M. Irwing provided a good plot that will capture people’s attention. The plot touches on important topics, which will impact an individual’s perspective on the overall story. For this reason, I believe this book would be a great read for young adults and those who like the unexpected.
