Heartaches 2 by HM Irwing is the second book in the Bad Boy Vibes series. It's the story of two broken souls, Anna Walter-Simmons and Rafael Russo Brown who find each other in circumstances dictated by fate, and help each other through the pain, fear and nightmares. It's a rather outdated and cliched plot, but it's still pretty enchanting.
Boy and girl fall in love despite their insecurities and inner demons. The girl's ex and some other bad guys cause a lot of problems for the two of them. The girl's ex turns out to be her lover's step-brother. The boy runs off for a while, to digest this new piece of information. They meet again and they realize that they missed each other so much, and that they shouldn't have walked away, and they're back together, just in time for the next plot development to challenge the peace and quiet that they'd created.
My favorite thing about Romance books is that it doesn't matter if it's the tenth or the fiftieth modification to the same basic structure, it never gets old. I have read way too many romance books by now and the characters all blend together after a while. I can't tell you, from memory, what made the various heroes and heroines of the books that I've read, unique. I enjoyed Heartaches 2 because reading it was a unique experience, for as long as the one hundred and fifty pages lasted. It was an experience distributed equally into the sweet and scary categories.
The characters, in some aspects, were not people I could relate to, since I do not know what it feels like to be a soldier, just as much as I'm unaware of what being raped does to a person. In other aspects, however, they were both just normal people utterly in love with each other, and while that is just another instance where I have no first-hand experience to back up the story, it still helps me connect with the characters more. It's a wonderful book for people who have a few hours to spare and aren't looking for any heavy reading.
There were a few spelling and grammatical errors in the book, but they did not get annoying. It was a short and somewhat relaxing read. For any interested readers, I would just like to mention that the book has quite a few sex scenes, consensual and otherwise. Read at your own risk. I would give this book 3 out of 4 stars.
