In life, fate and destiny have a strange way of bringing together people that do deeply actually need and love each other. The beginning can be doubted and questioned, but the bond leaves no trails of suspense in the end and lasts for a life time.

Nothing weighs on us greatly like a secret. This saying is explained clearly with in Heartaches . A great need to be understood and accepted without judgement is what Anna and Rafeal crave. They crossed paths a couple of times during family gatherings but hardly took notice of each other. After tragedy strikes in both of their lives at different times but similar situations, some how, they get drown to each other. Anna seeks someone to tell the whole truth. Rafeal happens to be that confidant. Little does she know he has the exact baggage weighing him down with nightmares every night.

Anna was drugged and raped by the three Preston men. Betrayed by her first love, a man that was the reason behind her sudden confidence. Only to find out it was all a lie, she was used to pay off a debt her murderous step brother Brian had acquired from the Preston family and failed to pay back. Rafeal is situation was not any different though the location of the tragedy was the only difference. While serving in the army, Rafeal lost his team members in Syria which left him beyond depressed. He looked out for some relief through speaking with the commander of the base who took advantage of his depressing situation to test his black market drugs on him and more so sexually abuse him in front of his mates who where also given free rounds, living him seated in his own blood. Besides everything, Anna and Rafeal stick together to fight the predators who still intend to make their lives difficult.

The writer’s description of the life at the military school is interesting. The analysis of some of the different reasons people head off to military school are intriguing. Besides all the different reasons they all showed up for, getting hard training was no exception which left them better than they had come in.

The confidence and strength of Anna and Rafeal to seek justice is what I like most in the novel. Their predators are people with powerful connections but they stand to believe justice will be served. They chose to fight as a team which was a smart decision. The vivid description of the bad events is a little freaky and that’s the part of the novel I didn’t like. Other than that, Heartaches is a good novel, worth reading, focusing on the strong love bond between Anna and Rafeal that kept growing stronger till the end.

I would recommend this novel to only those above the age of 18 due to the content within. The writer leaves no stone unturned when describing all the sexual events within the novel some of which are not pleasant. That being said, the novel is good and will be love more by people that love the military and romance. I rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars.
