Killing the Rougarou, a story about how the sexual abuse of a little girl can cause trauma and destroy the routine and joy of an entire family.
The book begins with the romantic story of Matthew Gauthier and Jessie, parents of James, "The Girl", an innocent 5-year-old girl abused by Markem, a pedophile and serial killer, named as "The Rougarou" by the family for being the monster that would have hurt the little girl and that would have caused chaos in the family dynamics due to the rape, a situation that conditioned the future of the characters , mainly James' brothers, who, being older than her, did everything possible even when they reached adulthood to prevent their sister from being hurt again by the Rougarou, who is obsessed with the girl and does everything possible to have her back even after serving his sentence and without caring about killing everyone who gets in his way.
Although the story focuses a lot on the romantic part of the character’s stories, it also addresses on several occasions the situations of child abuse, not only of James, but also of other characters, and I appreciate that, although the subject is not touched in depth, it also does not seek to romanticize or justify the aggressors, but shows the harsh reality of how an aggression of this type can emotionally ruin not only the victim but also the families.
It is an easy book to read, and as it says in the prologue, it is a story that will make you feel something, joy, anger, frustration, hope and even discomfort, but you will surely feel something as it is a mixture of romantic scenes, drama, jealousy, justice and injustice, thriller and even some sexual scenes slightly explicit.
I thought the story was good, but I think it moves a little slow at the beginning because it first covers the story of the family from childhood to adulthood and occasionally shows stories about other characters and descriptions of places and situations that are not so necessary, so I give it 3 stars out of 5. As I said before, the plot is interesting, but these unnecessary scenes sometimes make you lose the context or find the sense of why the author decided to detail them in the book.
