"Deceptive Calm" written by Patricia Skipper 1 would say in my opinion is a novel sharing
spiration as you follow an emotional journey of a young girl with no family, unsure of her
lineage that loses the only mom she knew and had her hear broken by her one true love
She had her best friend who always ended up by her side to go through life with as the story
unravels to share sensitive but compelling topics going from the East Coast to the West
Coast and the deep down south that is sure to keep any reader emotionally engaged. This
book Ifeel spreads light on sensitive topics from mixed race relationships, abortions
abusive relationships and many more which helps to show strength, promise and hope to
others in tough situations. As the story starts out slowly with extra details on the history of
civil war, segregation and martial law, but then picks up pace and gets better as it goes on. I
feel the beginning of it was slow, long and drawn out but halfway through I could not stop,
the ending was short compared to the build up I expected more. With different races
involved, how a family can strongly recommend who and who you should not be with and
the power that money can buy this book caught me off guard many times. This is a book
that has a little of everything for everyone from history to romance and drama, even a little
bit of suspense and thriller feel. Among the many more twists and turns you never know
what is next or what to expect. You have an orphan who was loved more conditionally from
her mother who was a nun, and someone not related by blood, to a money hungry family
who was so cold and worried about their public figure they would try to protect their name
and image no matter the cost. This touches many lives as well and gives hope to mothers
who end up in the wrong relationship and gives hope of the high school sweetheart
romance. 1gave it a rating of 4 out of 5 only because of the slow beginning, but all together
it was well written expressing the uncertain times to elaborate on the complexities of race
and segregation with many of life's struggles and triumphs of a young black females
journey through life.
