I listened to this book as an audiobook to pass the time while I went for walks or was working on my own. It didn’t take very long before I was looking for excuses to take walks or clean the house because I got hooked. It was very well recorded and edited, and I enjoyed the narrator doing different voices and accents when the story called for it. I rate this story a 5 out of 5. The only problem I had with it was that it seemed as though it took half of the story to really get going. At first, I was unsure if I’d like it because it did feel like it started a little slow. But slowly, one thing after another, it unfurled. It was an amazing story of a young lady turning into a woman and mother and the hardships she endured. Watching the character find who she was while she grew was amazing. And the ending made me gasp. I audibly exclaimed, “That cannot be how it ends?! I need more!” The author knows how to make a cliffhanger like it’s second nature. Yet at the same time, left it without any loose ends. I would be more than ecstatic if this author decided to make a sequel. The author has a way of making you root for the protagonist and become invested in her life as if it were real. And I loved every minute of it! The author evoked real feelings of happiness and sadness from me, the reader. I even shed tears for the main character because I have been in some similar situations as written and felt sympathy. The author has a way of making fiction feel real. As a person of color, the main themes of this book really stuck hard with me. I am glad this author was able to convey the struggles people of color face and the impacts even one person can have. I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen to this book and will probably listen to it again. I will definitely be on the lookout for any future titles by this author to sink my teeth into! Time is one resource we can never get back, and I would gladly give my time to this author again and again to read the words they gave their time to write.
