Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper is a surprising 4 out of 5 stars, in my opinion. The author skillfully combines drama, romance, mystery, and suspense, creating a truly remarkable reading experience.

Taking place in a truly troubled time period in America's history, in the swamps of the deep South. This time period shed a light on the unfair inequalities and segregation that distinguished the time. Where racial tensions arose and the Ku Klux Klan caused chaos. It was a time when there were still inequalities between sexes, a time when women weren't considered equal to even working the same jobs men and earning the same respect, let alone salary.

This is written with a very diverse cast of characters and personalities. Sister Rosalie was a Catholic nun who was put in charge of an orphanage and caring for the children. She is very knowledgeable of history. She is loving, loud, and overbearing at times, all with good intentions.

Vanessa is an orphan who grew up with Sister Roe as her mother, not knowing the identity of her true parents. Her character is conservative and daring. She is vision struck and enthusiastic. Vanessa faces racial tensions being light skinned during a time where she doesn't seem to fit in, in the eyes of others.

Trisha is a wild, free spirited type coming from a military background with a marine for a father. She is a more rebellious being more adventurous and open to danger.

Barry Hale, the son of the prominent doctor Hale, is more of a charming and loving type. Barry tends to be very heroic in many cases, stepping up in the face of danger. He is a character so well written that you want him to succeed, especially following in his father's footsteps.

Todd Van Westerkamp coming from a rich family is one you will love to hate it's just something about him. He comes off as charming at first he is egotistical, entitled, and controlling. He is sexually excessive and narcissistic. His mother is the typical condescending rich type who will try to make you think you're not good enough to even breathe in her presence.

As the narrative unfolds, it becomes more clear that this novel will resonate deeply with readers. The books ending is surprising and thought-provoking, leaving readers with a cliffhanger that will leave them hoping for a sequel. With the unforgettable cast of characters, intricate plot, and historical significance, Deceptive Calm is a must-read for fans of mystery, romance, and historical fiction. I would definitely recommend reading this one for yourself as you will be content whether there is a sequel or not.
