HEARTACHES: BAD BOY VIBES BY H.M. IRWING was quite an interesting romance novel. I don’t mean interesting to be implied in a bad way. It was actually better than I was expecting it to be. When I saw it was a romance novel I expected the typical subpar plot that continuous books have to offer and was pleasantly surprised by the difference in this book at least compared to ones I’ve read. I haven’t read too many other romances to be fair, so I’m not an expert in this genre nor do I have much to compare it to unlike others, but compared to the books that I had read it was refreshingly different.
Heartaches: Bad Boy Vibes is about a young woman named Anna Simmons who’s not had the best relationships. Due to her lack of great relationships, her trust is almost nonexistent. She’s been hurt by almost everyone close to her which has led her to the edge of brokenness. Feeling alone she comes to meet a handsome young ex-army man who goes by the name of Rafe Brown. Rafe doesn’t exactly have the best track record either. He returns home to Australia when their two paths cross. From then on out, it is a very passion filled, an erotic story in which two characters look back on their pasts and how they’ve gotten where they are now. They both need to fight and admit to the demons haunting them in order to make it work between the two.
I will say this though, it doesn’t seem that there’s a content warning in any pages before this starts and there should be. This book does contain talk about abuse and rape, both by one attacker and gang rape. So please read with caution.
I liked this book mostly because of Rafe. I’m a sucker for bad boys in fiction. After reading about him and what has happened to him it was hard not to develop a yearning to rip him out of the pages and care for his wounds left by the demons of his past. Anna was kind of annoying to be quite honest. I didn’t find her unlikeable completely, but she was fairly annoying. Like Anna from 50 shades annoying. It almost felt like some parts she purposely played dumb. But to be fair Rafe wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.
I didn’t like the other males mentioned in this book. I thought they were cringe-worthy and disgusting. If you read this book then you’ll understand why. They were stereotypical piggish men which irked me. But to each their own I guess. One other thing I didn’t care for was I found out this is a trilogy which sucks because it means this might drag out with the two other books. I’m going to read the second to see how it compares to this first book. But most romance trilogies tend to get boring by the third book. Hopefully, this isn’t the case for this book.
I’m giving the book 2 out of 4 stars. I thought it was good, but the content did seem kind of problematic with how the men were written and how the woman was hypersexualized. There were scenes that also made me uncomfortable. Like I said it was good, but some parts were problematic and uncomfortable to read. I think people who like erotic romance novels will devour this. Again, romance and erotic novels are not my forte so much, but some aspects of the book were good. Others not so much.
