Amanda is haunted by too many losses in her life from her parents to her older brother to her fiancé. Her road to recovery is supported by a loving godmother and a younger brother with a family of his own. When Amanda meets Mark in a very unusual way, their connection is unmistakable. Their attraction, undeniable. A grandfather clock and delving into a past life put Amanda's already fragile state into a world of chaos. She believes that everyone she loves will die. Could a trip into the past break Amanda once and for all? Is Mark strong enough to stay by her side even when she wants to be left alone and wallow in despair?
The developing love and attraction between Amanda and Mark in the book, Yesterday, is artfully described by author Samyann. I felt butterflies in my stomach with the descriptions of the way Mark looks at Amanda, goosebumps when the characters find their past lives, and tears reading about tragic losses of loved ones. The author was able to bring the characters to life to where a reader could empathize with each situation. The mystery revolving around a grandfather clock and the connection between Mark and Amanda take us back in time, to historical places and events.
The transitions from past and present are seamless and the author captures the scenery of several landscapes and time periods with perfection. The author's knowledge of historical events are portrayed accurately throughout the story. As a reader, I also appreciated the additional information regarding many of the historical sites and stories along with links and recipes at the end of the book for my own perusal.Amanda's face clouded as she walked to the living room. So now I know this clock was in the Chicago Fire. A child adopted well over a hundred years ago disappeared. What does that mean? She looked up at the imposing clock.
The weakness of the main character in her inability to deal with life head-on turned her, at times, into a self-absorbed alcoholic and unrelatable. It was difficult to believe when other characters described her as being strong and self reliant. It is hard to NOT fall in love with Mark. Not only the description of his physical characteristics but his tenderness and ability to be vulnerable drew me to his character, even in his most arrogant state which sounded more charming than pompous. My only complaint is that the story ended too quickly. As connections were finally coming together, the storyline could have been stretched out longer to give it the climactic ending it deserved and warranted.
I give Yesterday 4 out of 4 stars for its timeless beauty and delving into a little known world of psychiatry and past life therapy. The love stories pull on your heart strings. The tragedies become tales of familial connections that don't always have to do with bloodline. A very unique approach to a great love story with historical twists.
