I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It was a little slow at the beginning, but about a third of the way through, I couldn't put it down. I rated it a 4 out of 5. I felt like it was a very good book, one that I could recommend, but not the best book I have ever read. There were some graphic sex scenes and language used throughout the book. Some might be uncomfortable with this.

There is a lot of history given throughout the book. The author gives a lot of history of the south. We are made more aware of racial issues in the 1960's, especially the differences between races and how they were treated in a community At first, the history seemed like a lot, but the more I read, the more it helped make the story, to see what was going on in the world at the period the story was written in.

The author did an excellent job showing the relationships between the main characters, as they developed and changed over time. Each character was well developed, so I felt like I knew them, and didn't have any problems keeping them straight when they showed up again later in the book. The interactions between characters were realistic, between family members, friends, and coworkers.

There were times when I wanted the story to speed up, but looking back, the time that was spent on each detail was necessary to set the stage for the ending. I wanted to skip to the end, to see which characters were still there at the end. I can't think of anything that I would change to make this a better book.

The only thing disappointing about this book was the ending. It ended too soon. I felt like I was left hanging and I wanted to know more about the future of the characters.

I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading another book by this author. I'm glad I made the decision to read a book by an author I hadn't heard of.
