“Anatomy of Revenge” by Fred Grace is a gripping narrative that explores the complex lives of three individuals—Beth, Suzanne, and James. Beth and Suzanne, childhood best friends, share a bond as deep as the roots of their small-town upbringing, and although life pulls them in different directions, they never drift too far apart. In college, fate introduces Beth to James, and together, they fall deeply in love but agree to prioritize their ambitions first.
In my opinion, the initial storyline reveals too many details and spoilers that foreshadow events occurring in the final 50 pages of the book, thereby creating false expectations for the reader.
The narrative of this book unfolds primarily through dialogue, with the characters’ conversations serving as the backbone of the story. Much of it is delivered in rapid-fire exchanges, often separated by little more than periods and quotation marks, which gives the impression of reading subtitles rather than immersing oneself in a rich, emotive world. This minimalist approach strips the conversations of emotional depth, rendering them flat, detached, and at times difficult to follow. The characters frequently repeat each other’s names to remind the reader who is speaking; however, the lack of emotion and descriptive context makes it easy to lose track of the dialogue. Furthermore, we barely know what the characters look like, making it challenging to visualize them in our minds. The narrative reads almost like a daily journal—concise and devoid of inner reflection. Sentences are short, clipped, and direct, often reduced to the most basic structure, resembling terse telegrams exchanged between characters. One example can be found on page 51 of the Kindle version: “Claire drove to Jess's place. She met Jess on the porch with the food. They sat on the porch swing and chatted.” This ineffective dialogue technique often leads the author to neglect the quotation marks at the beginning or end of the lines, which is a primary source of the grammatical errors I have identified. Further evidence that the story was not professionally edited is the author's tendency to change paragraphs at random, even within the same speech by the same character. Despite this, I assert that no vulgar or offensive language was used.
Finally, there are elements that appear to have been included solely to extend the narrative. One example is a formal evening speech that is randomly inserted and unrelated to the story in Chapter 12, as well as James's road trip, which is the focus of Chapter 27.
The primary strength of this story lies in its portrayal of friendship and family. In this regard, the narrative is imbued with feelings of happiness and serenity. A twist in Chapter 29 injects a sense of liveliness into the plot, making it captivating through to Chapter 31, the final chapter.
“Anatomy of Revenge” receives a rating of 2 out of 5 from me—a story with potential that ultimately falls short. At its core, the plot is solid, featuring a positive character arc and genuinely likable characters. I didn’t dislike the story itself, but the reading experience was hindered by choppy dialogues, lack of fluidity in the conversations, and numerous errors that made it difficult to follow. Consequently, the book struggled to maintain my full engagement. This story could truly shine with more refinement, as I believe that with greater depth and attention to detail, “Anatomy of Revenge” could achieve the emotional richness it aspires to convey.
