Drawing inspiration from the Book of Job in the Bible, Cynthia J. Koelker crafts a unique story based on romance and religion. The Legacy of Job’s Wife tells the story of an honest man Job and his wife Zhabella who went by the nickname Ix’ises. It spans their childhood to old age and is narrated by Ix’ises. Themes of love, religion, family, friendship, and forgiveness arise as the world of Job and Ix’ises comes to life with vivid descriptions of their growth, hardships, and prosperity through the amazing words of the author. The setting is similar to that of the Book of Job and is observed through their dwellings, means of travel, and the birthing of babies, among other things.

While reading The Legacy of Job’s Wife, what I enjoyed the most about the novel was the depiction of how they grew to love each other from childhood and remained in love despite hardships and their differing beliefs in God. I also enjoyed how particularly descriptive the author was as that allowed me to get lost in the story, picture events vividly, and feel the emotions of the characters. For example, the author describes Ix’ises singing using the following phrase: "lilting tones floating unescorted on the evening breeze". Another example is the description of a porch as "an ornately adorned porch, where potted evergreens and vines created a garden-like atmosphere".

That being said, although extremely necessary to the storyline, I did not like the vivid descriptions of disease and would not recommend the book to anyone who has extreme abhorrence at such descriptions. With religion being a major theme in the novel, I would also not recommend it for atheists and persons with opposing religious beliefs. However, individuals who enjoy a great blend of romance and religion would surely love this story as much as I did.

It is also worth mentioning that the novel was exceptionally edited as I could find no grammatical or spelling errors. My only dislike, as mentioned previously, was necessary to the storyline and as such I would still rate the novel a five on a scale of one to five. It was a great read, and I learned especially the importance of forgiveness. The author did an excellent job writing The Legacy of Job’s Wife.
