Yesterday: A Novel of Reincarnation, by Samyann, is a story that is artfully told across two timelines. When Amanda Parker and police officer Mark Callahan meet in a moment of disaster, they are both sure that they have met before. However, they both also know that their meeting was not in this lifetime. While dealing with the issues of their modern lives, the pair explore the possibilities of past lives and reincarnation using regression therapy.

While Amanda is initially uninterested in pursuing a relationship of any kind, her curiosity brings her to explore the past for clues to how the pair know one another. As she experiences the turmoil and loss of a past life, she teeters on the edge of pushing her future away. Will she solve the mysteries of the past and heal in the present, or will she give up and walk away? The characters in this book were human enough to make me wonder about the ending. I wanted the mystery solved, and a happy ending, but none of this was guaranteed.

The plot of this book was phenomenal. While the presence of multiple story lines offered the potential for a muddy plot, the author took two distinct story lines, and used both to create a novel that can only be described as breathtaking. The story is beautiful, but Samyann makes a bigger statement in the pages. She shows us that our responses shape our experience as humans, and that is a powerful message.

This book drew me in from the very beginning. The author has a wonderful ability to describe the settings in ways that bring the reader to the moment. Many times, while reading this book, I got so lost in the story that I forgot that I was reading. This level of immersion is a direct reflection of the storytelling ability of the author.

Another positive aspect of this book was the attention to historical detail. There was a lot of history interwoven in the story, and the author took the time to research thoroughly the time periods and locations about which she wrote.

The plot, the storytelling, and the historical accuracy all contribute to my rating of 4 out of 4 stars. There were no noticeable errors in grammar or spelling, and that allows the reader to focus on the unique, enchanting story that unfolds in the pages. When I opened this book, I was not expecting to encounter a new favorite. However, Samyann has earned another fan.
