Sarah Marie Graye shows us all how depression and sadness can cause life altering effects in her inspiring novel The Second Cup. Her novel shows us that life is much more precious than you think when Jack takes his own life. Sending four women who have befriended each other in times of need spiraling in to their own emotion roller costars. This story's flashbacks describe how each of the characters have gone into their own form of sadness and depression they didn't realize they had until Jack's death.

Faye, Abbie, Beth, and Olivia are all friends, each with their own past that have dragged them down from being the successful, overly happy people they once thought they could be. When Faye goes looking for her true love and ex-boyfriend Jack, she finds that she is too late. Jack has killed himself. When word spreads to Abbie, Beth, and Olivia not all of them take it well. With each of the girls trying to cope and figure out how to live with this news, they realize they must rely on each other for strength to get their lives in order. The real question in this book is did Jack really kill himself or was it an accident?

I liked how descriptive the author was with the surroundings and how descriptive the flash backs were. She painted a picture that I felt like I was right there with each of the characters. I also loved how this book has many meanings to it, The Second Cup made me think of having a second chance. A second cup of life. A chance for them to see that they all needed help. That this death has affected them in a way they never thought was possible giving them time to change. I feel that it also shows how small this world truly is with two of the girls knowing Jack but never knowing the other knew.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it to other readers, it wasn’t a book that I want to read again. The book was well edited and well written, my issues were with the flashbacks. While they were very descriptive and informative, they sometimes caused confusion. I would get lost on what I was reading. The chapters are broken down by characters and flashback so I would sometimes get lost on if I was in a character's chapter or in a flashback.

I really want to take this time to thank the author Sarah Marie Graye for writing this book. It gave me yet another chance to read, which I love to do. Even though this wasn’t necessarily the best book I've ever read, I did genuinely like this book and with that I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I look forward to reading more of her books!

I didn't really get a feel for the character's depression in the book besides Faye's the whole idea of someone's suicide affecting a person who didn't even know him so drastically that she's hospitalized isn't something I can buy into. Overall I didn't think it was an accurate depiction.
