Trip to Adele by R.I. Alyaseer and A.I. Alyaseer is about three distinct story set in its own different countries and culture. Written in alternating first person perspective, this may not be a romance novel but this book contains three different story about love.
A concert of Adele in Verona centers the world of three lives. Elias, a Moroccan living in Rome. He believed in myth due to his origin, goes back to Marrakesh to look for his long-lost love from eight years ago. Still attached to his feelings to Malika, he followed the advise of a shawafa. His journey to find her lead him to find more than what he was looking for. Strong willed Nadia from Jordan, a single mother to a son who loves Adele. Her story is a constant battle to gain her freedom in all aspect- as a mother and as woman. Yaser of Las Vegas, a married man with a perfect life but not really a perfect story. He began to realize that his marriage deteriorates into an ugly truth. He rebeled against everything - his wife, her faith, their marriage. He reflected on his life from the moment he fell in love to the reason he agreed to see a marriage counselor.
For such a short read, this book portrayed three different story in three different cultures with three so different characters. Though this is a slow-paced read for me- in a way that I have to adjust my mood before I have to start a new chapter. The diversity of each character is what made this a charming read. This read triggered a lot of emotions to me due to its realism. It featured Adele’s songs as if a soundtrack in every scene or event in the long lives of the characters, added feelings to this book.
I like the book showed a lot of arguments and sides not only to the characters but also to the cultures and traditions, old and new, good and ugly side. This is actually my first time to be aware of Elias’ cultural background, (the shawafa, glimpse to El- Fnaa, the shata) and I was very affected when the reason why Elias left Malika was revealed. This is also the first time I read about a tribe where Nadia belonged and the tradition they hold and live even in this modern world. Yaser’s life is an example of reality we currently live in modern society - the social media facade. The characters’ reactions to their circumstances and their own struggles makes me them so real and relatable.
The feel of this book might dig deep holes or open old wounds but it will at least make you reflect and confront more of your feelings and find resolve. It touched a lot of issues and showed the reality of the world we live-in and sometimes overlooked. Like the following excerpts: “Were all women ungrateful? Was it always our fault?” - Yasser or “why should I ever have to please a man” - Nadia
I relate most to in Nadia character. Although we have very different cultural background and origin, I relate to her struggle as a mother and her struggle to fill in the gaps as a single parent. As a woman responsible in raising a child, her life-story who always fight for right, her instinct as a protective mother is our common factor. Freedom is everywhere but we constantly fights for it. Also some of her lines punched me in the gut so hard I have to breath a little before I continued reading.
I recommend this book to adults or maybe to persons with mature mind. There are no mature contents in this book but featured life- struggle that adults will relate to and mature minds will appreciate and take reference. If your into realism or life story, give this book a chance. And of course to all Adele’s fans.“her lyrics related to me perfectly”(Excerpt From My Trip to Adele)
A dramatic yet straight forward read for me. A little little heavy in the heart.I got hooked into reading all the way and has given me a roller coaster emotional experience. Over all I’m giving this book a 3 out of 4. Though I had issue on how the story lead into, it was satisfactory and I’m glad I’ve got to read this book. This is a whole new experience read for me.
