I recently finished reading, “Yesterday”, by Samyann, a short book, only about 400 pages long. It is a story dealing with the concept of reincarnation and is told in an illustrative way. Our protagonists, Amanda and Mark, who are like star-crossed lovers, revisit moments in time from their previous lives. They must find out how they can feel so familiar with each other, even though they have never met. Personal tragedies must be overcome for love to be found.
Overall this book brings the enjoyment out of reading. It flows well from beginning to end. The characters are mostly believable and interesting. Descriptions of scenes are very clear. I felt that I was able to watch a 4K movie playout in my head. I am a bit disappointed that the female and male leads are clichés. Mark is tall, strong, and handsome with barely a fault to find. Amanda is not exactly a femme fatale, but she seems to think she is which makes the way she carries herself annoying at times. However, I found myself able to forgive that.
The aspect I find the hardest to forgive is the lesson that appears to be completely overlooked by Amanda. For a man that deals with the concept of life and death daily as an infantry officer, I thought the novel gave some needed advice to people who seem to give up on life after the loss of a loved one. Amanda’s god-mother states that, “If you resign yourself to a life of tragedy, you can expect tragedy” (381). At her next encounter with Mark, it seems the counsel of Amanda’s god-mother, Mary, did not register. It takes an object, something removed from the lesson for her to finally accept Mark’s love. That is a missed opportunity to me.
The story does not miss out on sharing some points in history through the story. Beyond the dream sequences mostly occurring during the Civil War there is nothing very epic discussed in the story. However, elements such as the saving of church bells and the Chicago Fire of October 1871 are woven neatly into this novel. I found myself frequenting the Google web browser to lookup locations and events, which created a deeper appreciation for the story and a greater level of interest.
This book gets a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The wording is very descriptive. Though the main characters seem like clichés, they are still built in a way that invokes emotion. One cannot but wonder how these two will get together. I was invested in finding out why there was an attraction between them for most of the book. I believe most regular readers will find this a worth-while way to pass time.
