The Legacy of Job's Wife by Cynthia J. Koelker
'The Legacy of Job's Wife' is a novel by board-certified family physician and author Cynthia J. Koelker. The description shows that the book offers a beautifully crafted narrative, which lured me to choose it.

The story is told from the perspective of Job's wife, Ix'ises. She takes the readers down memory lane from her cradle. Every minute detail of their family and her attachment to Job is narrated with probity. Little family anecdotes described in this novel bring a feeling of warmth. Here, Job's character is well exposed, as shown by his childlike simplicity, profound faith in God, and true and passionate love for Ix'ises.

The author depicts the simple as well as arduous lives of both Job's and Ix'ises's families. The mothers keep their families safe and intact in the absence of their husbands and grown-up sons and thus truly become the definition of woman empowerment. Koelker narrates the love and bonding among the siblings. The beautiful picturesque description of pastoral animals and dogs depicts a real picture of village life. Even a little bird becomes a character in this novel.

Though the main theme is the intense love and trust between Job and Ix'ises, this novel skilfully expresses the themes of grief, despair and the search for trust and hope in the face of devastating loss. Job's love and responsibility for Ix'ises are praiseworthy. But life is not a Cinderella tale and bad things always happen to disrupt human sanity. This book upholds grave questions about faith, suffering and human resilience in the face of fatal adversity.

I enjoyed Koelker's diligent and beautiful narration. I was touched by how Ix'ises raised her twin sisters with motherly love. The beginning of each chapter with a beautiful verse attracted my attention. I liked how the author profusely used Christian references but made them suitable for all readers irrespective of their religion.

However, the author introduces too many characters and this leads to confusion and halts an easy and engaging reading experience. The incidents of the loss of all the children and Job's arrival after death seem quite unrealistic and make the ending naive and unbelievable.

Otherwise, the book is professionally edited without any typos. Though this novel bears the strong message of selfless love and complete submission to God, I would like to give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars because of its unrealistic ending. I would love to recommend this book to all who want to quench their thirst for faith and love through an engaging narrative.
