The conflicts and emotions of this book reverberated soundly with my own. There is no doubt that this book deserves to be a book of the month.
My Trip To Adele is a drama novel co-authored by R. I. Alyaseer and A. I. Alyaseer, who are siblings. The book is self-published, however, it is remarkably well written. The storyline is easy to follow without being boring. There is a strong theme of love, power, and religion, but also there is a significant amount of gender role issues in the community and workplace, divorce, culture, and tradition.
My Trip to Adele is a story of three strangers who share their love for Adele's music. Nadia is a single mother from Jordan who won freedom from her ex-husband, but he still controls her through their son Waleed. Nadia and her son Waleed both love Adele’s music. So she plans a vacation for them to attend an Adele concert. She manages to save enough money, but she never imagined she would face multiple challenges that test her will. Yaser and his wife Mariam are surgeons with a picture-perfect life on Facebook but are miserable in real life. We witness as they attempt to undo all the damage that has been done and rediscover their love. The third story is that of Elias, whom we meet in Rome. Elias is tormented by memories of a girl he met in Morocco, his home country. She still haunts him after many years. He decides to go back to Marrakesh, only to find the opposite of what he initially sought.
There is a suspense that carries throughout the book, leaving no room for a dull moment. The storylines are beautifully narrated and held together by the songs from Adele’s repertoire. I appreciated being told the stories from the perspective of the main characters. This gives the book a personal feel. There is a vulnerability, and intimacy that mirrored the featured music. The lyrics also tell their own story and give the book a unique edge. The places where the story occurs are described vividly, which transports us to these locations. We are immersed in Marrakesh, in Moroccan culture and cuisine when we are with Elias. Then in Amman with Nadia, we drink coffee and drive the busy streets. Yaser leaves home to roam Las Vegas and takes us along on a journey of the city.
For a self-published book, the editing is very good. On page thirteen the sentence about taking Yaser's parents with them on holiday should be corrected to be: “But I wished my parents could have accompanied us like your parents did.” Also, on page 24, in the sentence "possessing something of value items wasn’t always easy.” the word “items“ is not necessary.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written story, with good character development. I strongly recommend the book to all readers.
