Ladybird by Magus Tor talks about self discovery on the road to understanding one's sexuality and love. It is a story that gives a deep insight into the understanding and minds of transgenders. It uses the story of a boy named John Birdman to give an in depth and compelling understanding of the workings of the minds of transgenders and what drives them.

The book is laden with the theme of love,a different kind of love that cannot be given a name, the love between a transgender female and a female. The story starts off with a boy named John Birdman who is being bullied by his mates at school but can't stand up for himself due to lack of self confidence with the belief that he is born into the wrong body, therefore, he feels like an alien in his body. The writer takes the reader on a journey to self discovery using John Birdman, the protagonist, and how he is able to defy all odds and understand his self. John meets a girl,Aureus by name who despite her religious beliefs helps John on his journey to self discovery. She becomes his friend and hope and helps him go against all odds, odds like his father and what society will think of him, to be come a transgender.

The book also speaks about brotherly love between John and his brother, Devon who does all he can to support John on his journey to self discovery. Finally,John becomes a transgender female named Joyce and starts to date a man named Tom. Aureus eventually falls in love with Joyce and the same goes for Joyce. This twists and turns in the book makes it quite compelling and intriguing. Although John's father has an aversion to John becoming a female,at the end he is okay with him and this speaks volume of the love his father has for him.His mother is okay with it and gives him her maximum support.J.P brings up the theme of youthful exuberance as he is John's bully and also as he tries to rape Aureus. The theme of forgiveness comes along as Aureus forgives J.P of his wrongdoings.

Generally, it is an interesting novel which can be used as a guide for self discovery. I really liked the editing of the book and there were no much noticeable errors. It covered many themes and was easy to understand. Every chapter held the reader's interest and had a message.

I rate the book a 3out of 4 because it holds the reader's interest from the first chapter to the end. It can't be a 4 out of 4 because it is not totally a perfect book.

In conclusion, I recommend this book to people that want to understand what drives transgenders, who need information on their behaviors and so on.
