Review of Marrying a playboy billionaire by H. M. Irwing.
This is a romance novel about a plus size woman who falls in lust with a hook up but years later the lust blossoms into a raging, passionate love. We meet Aria who brutally had her man stolen by her oh so gorgeous cousin. She is at a time in her life where she has a good job and is battling weight issues but otherwise is doing well for herself. She however cannot forget the arms she ran into the night her man left her…arms of a heartbreakingly handsome Justin…a childhood friend of Aria’s. After 5 years of living with the guilt of using Justin and running out on him she sees an opportunity to make things right…to redeem herself but there is much in store for her…much much in store.
The themes explored are love, lust, obesity, verbal abuse, marriage, family, self esteem and respect and body shaming. Aria is mostly the one who brings these to light as the story is told from her perspective. As a woman I completely related to most of her challenges and I found myself cringing as if I was personally experiencing her pain.
I found this book to be average if not less than average. The author rushed through the book with very little character development and a shallow story. There was no finesse in the transitions between chapters so much that a lot of the time I would lose track of the story, having to go back in the story to understand where I had missed a change. I also found the style of writing to be circumvent with unnecessary descriptions that add nothing to the story. For example Aria got in a cab and I feel the author need not spend a whole paragraph on the cab driver as he played a very minor role in the story, he did not influence the main character in any way, or the story, there really was no need to invest so much into a such an inconsequential character. I understand the need to set the scene in a story, to describe vividly and paint a picture however it also needs to be done in moderation and to be relevant to the story, I felt it was tedious to have to read all the excess descriptions. The author wrote as if we are reading are her thoughts, random and not fully thought out…so I suppose that implies I felt I was reading a draft that was yet to be edited and have all the small wrinkles ironed out. To the publisher Royalty Publishing House and the author credit is due because there were few typos and grammatical errors, if one is not too much of a strict reader they will not be overly annoyed.
In my opinion I find that for a romance to be a good book it needs to go deep into the characters and into the themes and we need to see growth and development of relationships over “time”. Books like Fifty Shades of Grey have really upped the standards of the romance genre because they now have made it a necessity for a romance to be engaging and to be captivating so much that a story remains with you long after you have put the book down. I will not remember this book at all, after a few other novels I will have forgotten the main character’s name.
The book is strictly for over 18s, there is sexual content as well as explicit language. If one is looking for a short steamy read and is not looking for anything to commit to then I would recommend this book.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
