Breaking Sandcastles by Kirk Burris is a romance novel that blooms into a lovely but complicated love story of a couple born 11 years apart. The story unfolds to a recollection of memories back in 1961 where the main characters crossed paths in Westport High, Kansas City.

Jonathan Duquesne, a senior high school student is deeply attracted to his art teacher – Marion Kelly. From their first meeting in her class, he is instanly captivated by her beauty and wit. Marion has eyes on Jonathan too, not only for his handsome and manly physique, but more so for his exceptional talent in arts. Marion however, stands her ground on maintaing only a student and teacher relationship between them, mainly because of their noticeable age difference.

Due to misunderstandings and some hurtful events, Jonathan decides to live and study overseas after he graduated from high school, while Marion stays in Kansas to practice her profession. After four years of leading their lives separately, they meet again in Paris. This time, not as student and teacher, but two friends rekindling their old times. Readers follow them as they struggle through ups and down of life and love. Will they have courage to create the love story they never had chance to pursue before? Or will they remain as good friends just as they did from the very start?

The main characters were well-presented throughout the novel. Supporting casts like Belladonna, Rowan, and Franchot added spice and color to the story. I find it exciting as the narration leaps from present to past. Turn of events are quite unexpected too. It made me squeal with joy and smile heartily. I also cried and wept at some point. This proves that emotions portrayed by the characters are strong and sincere enough to capture reader’s attention. Humor is also evident throughout, making it invigorating. Love-making scenes added thrill and depicted deeper connection between Marion and Jonathan, without being graphic or obscene.

I love how their passion on both love and career brought them to places – from Kansas to Paris, Monte Carlo and St. Tropez. These settings gave me brand new perspective, and also emphasizes the change of circumstances that the characters are in. Readers are also given short history and background of the sceneries. The only thing I don’t like in this book is the murder scene in the middle of the story. It does not convey any significance to the plot. It left me hanging and confused too. In the end however, all of those grey areas were cleared with logical answers.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this to those looking for sweet, pleasing read. It is a delightful romance novel that proves true love knows no age, no distance, no doubts. It instils some valuable lessons in life, one of which is that acceptance, forgiveness and trust are the foundation of lasting relationships.
