Review of The Fifie
The Fife by Marco Collina is a bit of a roller coaster. Out of 5 stars, I gave this book 2.5 stars. I think this book had both positives and negatives to it, but to end with the good news, I will begin with the negatives. In the beginning, this book stated that it would take place in an older time period, as a result, I thought the writing of the book was going to use outdated diction, but as one reads it, you can see that isn’t the case. At the very beginning of the book, there are words such as thou, ye, etc, being used to present this older setting that the author wants readers to be immersed in, but then later into the book, around 30 pages in, the author begins to switch to using present day diction. Instead of continuing with the diction that they already stated, they only sporadically use it, so when one does come across it in the book, it does present a very awkward stanza that readers come upon. Additionally, many of the sentences in the first half of the book were very choppy. I felt that many of the sentences could have been combined to fully demonstrate the author's ideas which shows that this book wasn’t professionally edited. This is shown through the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes made. These additional errors hindered the flow of the reading because sometimes readers were trying to figure out what the author was trying to convey. Additionally, what I personally didn’t enjoy from this author’s writing is that they felt like they had to explain every single phenomenon in detail. They never allowed any artistic freedom for the readers to think about situations on their own and to form conclusions on their own. Normally, I don’t mind this type of writing style, but the way this author did it makes readers subject to clearly notice these laid out thought processes that one had to follow. In contrast, there were many positive things about this book that were presented at the end of the book. For example, there were so many quotes about romance within this book that I enjoyed. Many of these quotes appeared at the end of the book, therefore it was my driving force to finish the book. Additionally, I did notice an improvement in the second half of the book revolving around the grammatical errors. The first half of the book unfortunately did have quite a lot, but the end of the book came off rather polished and seemed like it was written and professionally edited. As a result it was so much easier to read the second half of the book and I enjoyed that part of the story line. I was interested in the characters towards the second half of the book and what was going to happen to them. Therefore, as a result of all these factors I gave this book 2.5 stars out of 5 because, I do think this book is rather good and could be great, however some of its aspects do need work - like the grammar, diction, consistency of settings, etc. I would recommend this book to someone who is willing to help undiscovered authors get better, or if this person decides to rewrite this book. At the end of the book, it sounds like there is potential for a future something, so if there is, I’d love to read it to see how much any of the critiques I gave the author would be improved.
