I listened to the book, Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve on Audible. I do not typically listen to books. I have a tough time focusing on the story when I listen to it rather than read it. That was not the case with this book. I found I only had to go back and relisten a couple of times. This story was not like any romance novel I have read before. Having said that, I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 stars. It was a very intellectual story. Most romance novels that I have read are superficial, yet fun. This book was deep and contemplative. The relationship between Ellie and Neal was intense, but intense intellectually rather than physically. Honestly, I didn’t really like any of the characters. That is mostly why I rated the book a 3 out of 5 stars. I feel like I should have loved both Ellie and Neal at the very least, but I did not. I thought Neal was mostly selfish. I thought Ellie was out of touch with reality. The other characters, Jake, and Fae, I also didn’t care for. I don’t think we are meant to like Jake and that seems obvious. Fae was incredibly weak. Though she does seem to turn it around towards the end of the story and I appreciate that. There are several references to books throughout the story. I am not familiar with any of the books that were mentioned. I’m going to assume these titles are also very intellectual as both main characters reference and quote lines of these books. I may have enjoyed the story more if I had been familiar with the titles being referenced. That is by no fault of the author. I did not give my rating with that in mind. The story moved too slowly for me. It felt like I kept waiting for something to happen and not much happened. Overall, my dislike of the characters is why I rated as I did.
