“Looking Glass Friends” by E.L. Neve is a tale of two people who are drifting through their separate lives without an anchor. They each are trying to fill the void and find whatever small amount of happiness that they can. Until a gift chances to bring them together. They start to fill that void for each other. Corresponding through emails and sharing bits of themselves that they have never shared with anyone else. It’s a romantic story, but it lacks true emotion. Sure, there is love and romantic letters, but so much more happens and the characters just let it roll off their backs. To avoid spoiling the book for you, I won’t give the details, but there are some heartbreaking moments towards the end of the book and none of the characters get upset over them. If this story were to happen in real life there would be a lot more anger, heartbreak, screaming, and name calling. Instead, it’s as if all the characters just shrug their shoulders and say, “this is for the best”, then move on with their lives. I don’t want to completely discredit the author, there are some moments where the characters cry a little, but if your spouse cheated on you with your best friend don’t you think you would do more than just quietly walk away, contemplate it for a few hours, and then decide that it was “for the best” and try to salvage the relationship? It made it difficult for me as a reader to really get into the story because I kept laughing at the unrealistic response from the characters. The storyline as a whole was okay, it’s not the type of book that once you pick it up you can’t put it down again. However, if you like forbidden love stories, then maybe you will enjoy this one. I will say that the narrator did a fantastic job and he kept me interested in the book more than the book itself.
