I was a bit hesitant to read another book about witches and werewolves, but my love of romance novels won out, and I am glad it did. See a Witch About a Curse takes a trope that has been well used and gives it a new life. Our story centers around Lea, short for Azalea, a young witch left to fend for herself after her the murder of her parents. Despite being a powerful witch, Lea has opted to lay low and work as a gas station cashier to avoid detection by the magical community. Or at least she is content until she meets Bruce, who is, you guessed it, a werewolf. When, on an impulse, she offers to make a healing tea for Bruce’s sick friend, Lea’s quiet life is upended, and adventures ensue.

What makes this book such an entertaining read is Lea’s internal dialogue. She is the perfect mix of self-deprecating, vaguely awkward, and deeply caring, making her an endearing heroine. She also uses curse words very liberally, so keep that in mind if you are anti-profanity. The story centers around her trying to connect emotionally with a pack of werewolves. She is simultaneously convinced that they hate her while also a little in love with all of them, but more importantly, she really wants to be friends with them -- something that most people can relate to.

I am rating this book five out of five stars. My only complaint about this book is how quickly it was over. It felt like the author had just gotten me emotionally invested in all of the characters, the source of conflict, and the quest that Lea was about to embark on, and all of a sudden, I was reading the sentence “To Be Continued.” Otherwise, it was an extremely well-written, well-thought-out story, and I will be reading the next book in the series whenever it is available.
