Review of Yesterday
[Following is a volunteer review of "Yesterday" by Samyann.]
Yesterday by Samyann, is a romantic take on the recreation and past life regression myth. Coming from a pretty rough time in her life, Amanda is pulled into a story of her past. Through the fragile promise of love and the undivided support of her grandmother, Amanda seeks to understand what this life, and her last, have in common. She embarks on an emotional journey to uncover why she is haunted by the image of a secondhand clock, and why her new choice of a partner affects her so intensely.
I enjoyed this story, honestly. We can't judge a book by its cover, but in this instance, the cover pulled me in originally. Usually, my mind wanders and I am not entertained by fiction as much as I once was. Yesterday is refreshingly enticing. No parts of the book are slow or hard to get through, and the interesting and precise vocabulary makes for a smooth read. The first steps into regression are tender and familial. In particular, I appreciated that Mark and Amanda's romance was slow and represented real feelings of fear and anxiety over entering a relationship that may finally be healthy.
One thing I did not enjoy was the shortened “accented” Southern language. It reads well enough but it certainly comes off as racist and in my opinion, unnecessary. There are also mentions of the N-word in this book, and while I understand that it was used to convey the time period, I could have done without it.
All in all, this book was a smooth ride all the way through. There are sections that made me tear up a little. Bonnie's struggles with what is left of her family hit home for me. I would have enjoyed some more prolonged moments of intimacy and romance between Mark and Amanda, but it was handled delicately anyhow. The sweet underlying run of romance was fun both in the present tense and in regression. The regression “romance” was a bit forced in both style and in the person being incredibly forward in uncomfortable ways, and I suppose it can be attributed to a “sign of the times”, even if it is awkward. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. It is written well, with a solid storyline and ties most loose ends up nicely. I feel this book could easily set up a sequel too. I always appreciate a light romantic novel and winding the paranormal up into a solid storyline is always appreciated.
I would recommend this book to any romantic, lover of historical fiction, or anyone interested in the paranormal. It is written for an adult audience but any high school student would enjoy it as well. This book is a nice vacation from the world in a whimsical and heartfelt way.
