The Fifie, written by Marco Collina, is a novel of adventure, romance, and mystical events. Initially, the story begins with Marcas and Maureen, explaining their found interest in one another, as they take to the seas. During a mysterious occurrence, their love connection is explored through a deeper spiritual encounter. The two souls have been bound and will be put through the surge of time. As they find themselves in new lives, these lives come with new life circumstances, which causes difficulties for the two of them to fully embrace one another. They both come to understand that for them to be together they must be reunited in another lifetime. Which is done out in the seas, where the mystical events occurred the first time that sent them to the current time, they live in.

I highly enjoyed the storyline, as it is extremely unique. The time period was well depicted, as the ships and life out on the seas were described. I appreciated the way some of the other crew mates described the scenes they observed during the unusual events at sea. The way time, weather, and some other elements were manipulated helped to add to the mystical events that were occurring throughout the story. The idea of this soul connection being reunited throughout different time periods and places, was quite a refreshing take on romance.

Although, the romance does sit at the forefront of the story, I found their love to be underwhelming. There was not much of a buildup to their romance, it was very sudden. Which could have been the idea of love at first sight. But since it was very instant love, I found it hard to believe they were so madly in love. Also, during the second time frame, the conflict of relationships made me not very compelled to root for their connection, since I found the actions of the main character to be a bit shameful.

I love the world that was created in the story. The time period and the sea life, I was very much able to envision. The mystical events added great elements to enhance and propel the story. Unfortunately, since the main purpose of the novel centers around romance and I found myself disconnected to the main love connection, I am not able to give the novel a better score. Due to these things, I will be rating The Fifie, a three out of five stars.

The recommended audience should be for a more mature level, as there is some sexual content. Individuals that like sea life or ships. People that enjoy reading of the 1800’s time period. Also, those who enjoy adventure and romance, I believe could thoroughly appreciate this novel.
