Review of Yesterday
Yesterday by Samyann is a unique blend of romance and mystery with a touch of sci-fi and historical fiction. The story follows Amanda and Mark, who feel an instant connection as if they have met before, and start dating. But their relationship is not a typical one. The couple slowly uncovers mysteries surrounding an antique clock and explores the possibility of past lives and reincarnation.
One of the positive aspects of the book is the well-fleshed-out characters of Amanda and Mark, who have great chemistry and banter. The romance scenes are steamy and keep the readers engaged. The author's research on art and craftsmanship makes the story sound authentic and adds to the realism of the book. Additionally, the flashback chapters to a previous era are intriguing and add depth to the story. It is interesting to see where the stories might merge and maybe overlap to provide the answer to the mystery.
Only while reading the author's notes at the end do you realize that the book also has a touch of historical fiction! Even subtle details mentioned in passing are versions of true events, names, and places. The author has smartly woven these details while respecting culture and war heroes in the book. Even something really small, like a horse's name or a place the protagonists visit for a few moments, truly exists. Every moment of the book was truly believable, and the fine line between fact and fiction blurred in many places.
While the book is a great read, one negative aspect is that the relationship between Amanda and Mark feels rushed, as they fall in love and trust each other too quickly. However, the author justifies this with the past-life connection between the characters. There are great references and speculation about previous lives, the subconscious mind, and reincarnation. I would warn against the slightly offensive language towards black people in the story, although it is very subtle and necessary.
Overall, I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. The book is fast-paced, with layers of mystery and suspense that keep the readers hooked. The author has done a great job of blending different genres and creating a unique storyline that is both believable and engaging. I would suggest having the best experience by going in blind, like I did, thinking this is just another romance book. Don’t expect the mystery, don’t expect the sci-fi aspects, and don’t read other reviews to get glimpses of how surprised people were by the turn of events.
In my parting thoughts, I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romance story with a twist. The book is perfect for those who enjoy a mix of mystery, sci-fi, and historical fiction. Additionally, readers who appreciate well-researched and well-written stories will enjoy this book.
