Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve is a story of a deep and passionate relationship that forms between Ellie and Neil, who are both married. After Ellie meets Neil at the bakery he works at, she gets an urge to bring him one of her favorite books, which would become the foundation of their inseparable bond. They begin to communicate through email, challenging each other’s souls and the way they see life. These emails turn into late-night calls, and their relationship grows deeper and deeper. Both Neil and Ellie are faced with the difficult realization that they may have started their lives with the wrong person and that they may have finally met their true soulmate. Ellie is married to a very wealthy man named Jake, with a 5-year-old son named Johnny, and Neil to an average woman named Fay. Each of them must decide what to do-stay in their mundane relationships, living day-to-day, or step into the unknown to chase what could be true love.

Looking Glass Friends is not the typical romance novel. It challenges you and makes you think about things you probably have never thought about. This book allows you to see the authentic passion that can occur between two people, but also the “love” you may think you feel but turns out to be temporary. You see a relationship form from the very beginning and go from strangers to falling in love. You also see two relationships in their dying phases, where love is running out and people are trying desperately to hold on to them. The emotions are pure and genuine, and you feel for these characters throughout the whole book. I enjoyed the simplicity of the plot; there were not a lot of characters, and the story was focused on one thing, which made it easy to follow.

This was not a book I picked up and couldn’t put down. It did seem really slow at times, especially in the beginning. Each chapter changes perspectives without labeling them, so I found that hard to follow. Sometimes it took me a second to figure out whose perspective I was reading from. The author uses very sophisticated writing with a lot of metaphors, similes, and excerpts from poems and novels, which a lot of times went over my head. There are a lot of deep conversations with deeper meanings that challenge the way you perceive and think about relationships and life itself. I didn’t particularly like this, as I prefer easy-to-read and light stories.

I rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars. I didn’t find that there was really a climax or something to keep me invested in the book. There was not much excitement that kept me wanting to read more. There were things I wish would have happened that didn’t, and several places the author could have thrown in something thrilling but didn’t, which was disappointing. While it did provide an interesting perspective and was a unique book, I wouldn’t choose to read this type of book.

Looking Glass Friends is an excellent novel for anyone who enjoys having their worldview challenged and learning new ideas and perspectives. The vocabulary is very advanced, and there are some intimate scenes, but they are not detailed. This book is for mature audiences who also don’t mind a small amount of profanity. The profanity is not overwhelming, but there are some words and phrases that could be offensive.
